Multidrug resistance of Rhizoctonia solani determined by enhanced efflux for fungicides

Xingkai Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that plant pathogens can develop multidrug resistance (MDR) through metabolomic and efflux activities. The genes encoding ABC and MFS transporters were identified to be associated with MDR in Rhizoctonia solani, and their expression levels were higher in MDR mutant compared to the wild-type strain. Two of these transporters were found to be related to MDR and their roles were confirmed by detecting their protein products and high accumulation of an antifungal compound. These findings contribute to our understanding of fungicide resistance and the development of MDR.

Essential oil-grafted copper nanoparticles as a potential next-generation fungicide for holistic disease management in maize

Lham Dorjee et al.

Summary: In this study, essential oil-grafted copper nanoparticles (EGC) showed significant inhibition against maize fungal pathogens and improved physiological characteristics in treated maize plants. Optimized concentrations of Clove oil-grafted CuNPs can be used as an alternative to commercial fungicides without serious environmental impact.

Development of 1,3,4-Oxadiazole Derived Antifungal Agents and Their Application in Maize Diseases Control

Lin Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives were designed and synthesized, and their antifungal activities against maize disease pathogens were evaluated. The synthesized derivatives showed strong antifungal activities, especially against E. turcicum. Some compounds induced significant shrinkage and collapse of E. turcicum hyphae. Furthermore, these compounds with antifungal activities exhibited almost no cytotoxicity to MCF-7 cells. The 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives have the potential to be used as antifungal agents for the control of maize diseases.

An Aminobutyric Acid Transaminase in Zea mays Interacts With Rhizoctonia solani Cellulase to Participate in Disease Resistance

Xiuna Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a GABA-T enzyme, ZmGABA-T, was identified in Zea mays that interacts with a cell wall-degrading enzyme EG1, and it was found to inhibit allergic necrosis induced by EG1 and provide resistance to R. solani infection.

Control of Maize Sheath Blight and Elicit Induced Systemic Resistance Using Paenibacillus polymyxa Strain SF05

Bin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, an antagonist strain, named Paenibacillus polymyxa strain SF05, was isolated and found to exhibit antagonism against pathogenic fungi of maize and effectively control maize banded leaf sheath blight in the field. This strain showed high cellulase and chitinase activity, which could contribute to the degradation of fungi cell walls. The study also revealed the induction of different resistant genes in maize leaves and stems by the strain. The genome sequencing predicted genes related to the biocontrol mechanism of P. polymyxa strain SF05, including biofilm formation pathways genes, cell wall degradation enzymes, secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene clusters, and volatile organic compounds biosynthesis genes.

Nanosheet-Facilitated Spray Delivery of dsRNAs Represents a Potential Tool to Control Rhizoctonia solani Infection

Xijun Chen et al.

Summary: Rhizoctonia solani is an important pathogenic fungus causing serious crop diseases. Spraying double-strand RNA (dsRNA) can effectively reduce the occurrence of crop diseases. Loading dsRNA on nanosheets significantly improves its stability on leaf surfaces and its efficiency in entering leaf cells.

Transcriptome analysis reveals genes potentially related to maize resistance to Rhizoctonia solani

Hongxiang Cao et al.

Summary: Banded leaf and sheath blight (BLSB) caused by Rhizoctonia solani is a devastating disease in maize fields. This study reveals the transcriptome features of maize plants in response to R. solani infection, identifying differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and defense-related processes. Overexpression of certain candidate genes enhances resistance in rice.

Molecular characterization of a novel strain of Bacillus halotolerans protecting wheat from sheath blight disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn

Zhibin Feng et al.

Summary: A new strain of Bacillus halotolerans, named Bacillus halotolerans LDFZ001, was isolated with efficient antagonistic activity against Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn sh-1. Gene-editing experiments demonstrated that the functional expression of phosphopantetheinyl transferase and major facilitator superfamily transporter genes in Bacillus halotolerans LDFZ001 was essential for its antifungal activity. Additionally, the presence of two identical chitosanases may contribute to the antipathogen activity of Bacillus halotolerans LDFZ001.

The EDS1-PAD4-ADR1 node mediates Arabidopsis pattern-triggered immunity

Summary: Plants use cell-surface and intracellular LRR immune receptors to detect pathogens. Both PTI and ETI immune responses rely on the transcriptional activation of similar sets of genes, suggesting a convergence point for defense signaling cascades upstream of nuclear events.
