The effects of heat exposure on tropical farm workers in Malaysia: six-month physiological health monitoring

Vivien How et al.

Summary: This study compares the impact of slow-onset heat stress on conventional farmers and agroecological farmers. The findings indicate that agroecological farmers are more resistant to slow-onset extreme temperatures, whereas conventional farmers are more susceptible due to pre-existing metabolic health effects from pesticide exposure, delaying their adaptation to rising temperatures.

Wastewater treatment and emerging contaminants: Bibliometric analysis

Yixia Chen et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive summary of wastewater treatment and emerging contaminants research from 1998 to 2021 using bibliometric analysis. The analysis reveals that China has the highest number of publications and the closest cooperation with the United States. The most cited papers indicate that purification or removal techniques such as ozonation or membrane filtration can effectively remove pharmaceutical compounds from the water environment. Efficient detection of emerging contaminants and optimization of removal methods are identified as current challenges.

Exploring the influence of social and informational networks on small farmers' responses to climate change in Oregon

Melissa Parks

Summary: By using assemblage theory and social network analysis, this study explores the influence of Oregonian small farmers' social and informational networks on their beliefs about and responses to climate change. The findings indicate that small farmers' connections to other farmers and media in their networks influence their beliefs about climate change, while their responses are influenced by their ties to various agricultural and climatological information sources, as well as other nearby farmers.

Climate change impacts on soil salinity in agricultural areas

Dennis L. Corwin

Summary: Changes in climate patterns are negatively impacting agriculture, especially in arid regions. Proximal/remote sensors are useful in assessing the impact of climate change on soil salinity across scales. Factors such as salt-water intrusion, shallow water tables, and degraded water reuse will lead to increased soil salinity. There is a need for infrastructure and protocols to monitor soil salinity across multiple scales.

Mapping farmers' vulnerability to climate change and its induced hazards: evidence from the rice-growing zones of Punjab, Pakistan

Nasir Abbas Khan et al.

Summary: In developing countries like Pakistan, agriculture is crucial for the majority of rural populations, but climate change poses significant challenges to crop yield, particularly for rice farmers. Vulnerability assessments show that farmers in Punjab province are highly susceptible to climatic uncertainties, with those in low-yielding regions facing higher vulnerability levels. This highlights the need for region-specific adaptation strategies to reduce production losses and enhance climate resilience in the agriculture sector.

Smallholder farmers' climate change adaptation practices contribute to crop production efficiency in southern Ethiopia

Dessalegn Anshiso Sedebo et al.

Summary: This study conducted in the Lemo district of southern Ethiopia found that smallholder farmers who implemented more climate-smart adaptation practices were more technically efficient in major crop production, as well as wheat and teff production. In addition to climate-smart practices, farming experience, education, access to extension services, livestock holdings, and farm household income were identified as key determinants of technical efficiency. The study suggests a policy shift towards promoting smallholder farmers' adaptation to climate change using climate-smart practices to effectively respond to the impacts of climate change while enhancing technical efficiency.
