Fumigant toxicity and behavioral inhibition of garlic against red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta)

Zixia Song et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the fumigating activity of garlic and its effect on the behavior of Solenopsis invicta (S. invicta). It found that garlic contains several compounds, with diallyl disulfide and methyl allyl disulfide being the main constituents. Garlic showed strong fumigant activity and inhibited the behavior of S. invicta workers, with minor workers being more susceptible. This suggests that garlic and its compounds can be used as an eco-friendly approach to control S. invicta.

Toxicity and horizontal transfer of bifenthrin and dimefluthrin against the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), and the efficacy of their dust applications in the field

Ming-rong LIANG et al.

Summary: The red imported fire ant poses a significant threat to biodiversity, agriculture, and public health. Chemicals such as toxic baits and dust are commonly used for control, with dust providing faster results. This study tested the toxicity, horizontal transfer, and efficacy of bifenthrin and dimefluthrin dusts. The results showed that both bifenthrin and dimefluthrin were effective in controlling fire ants, with mortalities exceeding 80% in recipients after 48 hours of treatment.

Natielli Conceicao Santos et al.

Summary: Natural biological control is crucial for regulating insect pest populations in agroecosystems, but its effectiveness has been compromised due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides. Therefore, finding environmentally safe pesticides for sustainable food production is essential. This study found that essential oils from Croton grewioides and its major compounds were toxic to the soybean pest Chrysodeixis includens and the predatory bug Podisus nigrispinus.

Exotic Ants of the Asia-Pacific: Invasion, National Response, and Ongoing Needs

Yijuan Xu et al.

Summary: Human activity has introduced numerous exotic species through global trade, making the Asia-Pacific region, with its economic and trade activity, highly vulnerable to invasive species, particularly ants. The Asia-Pacific currently has over 60 exotic ant species, with the red imported fire ant being one of the most destructive. These exotic ants bring about significant economic and ecological problems to the region. Asian-Pacific countries have approached the issue of exotic ants in varying ways, with an overall lack of preparedness. To better manage the risks associated with invasive ants, it is recommended that countries take action in prevention, containment, and quarantine. Establishing an Asia-Pacific network for managing invasive ants can help prevent their introduction and mitigate their impacts.

Toxicity, horizontal transfer, and physiological and behavioral effects of cycloxaprid against Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Lang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of cycloxaprid, a newly discovered neonicotinoid insecticide, in controlling Solenopsis invicta and compared it with two referent insecticides, imidacloprid and bifenthrin. The results showed that cycloxaprid, imidacloprid, and bifenthrin effectively controlled S. invicta workers, with slightly slower action for cycloxaprid and imidacloprid. Cycloxaprid and imidacloprid could be horizontally transferred among ants, and they did not significantly affect the foraging behaviors of S. invicta workers.

Economic costs of invasive alien ants worldwide

Elena Angulo et al.

Summary: The study found that invasive ants have massive economic costs, with damage costs accounting for the majority, mainly impacting agriculture, public utilities, and social welfare. The reported costs are mainly concentrated in developed economies such as the USA and Australia, while cost information is lacking for most invaded countries. Therefore, collaboration between managers, practitioners, and researchers is needed to enhance cost reporting of invasive ants, providing important information for decision-making.

Herbal plants as alternatives for the management of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta

Ching-Chu Tsai et al.

Summary: The red imported fire ant (RIFA) is a highly invasive species that poses threats to native ecosystems, human health, and economic activities worldwide. The intensive use of synthetic pesticides in Taiwan's quarantine zone has proven to be ineffective in preventing RIFA re-infestation. Therefore, finding eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives for RIFA control is urgently needed. This study investigated the efficacy of planting herbal species in controlling RIFA populations. The results showed that herbal plants, such as Tagetes lemmonii, Cymbopogon citratus, and Chrysopogon zizanioides, effectively repelled RIFA and can be considered as eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives for RIFA control.

Methyl Benzoate as a Promising, Environmentally Safe Insecticide: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Md Munir Mostafiz et al.

Summary: The widespread use of synthetic chemical pesticides has led to insecticide resistance in many pest insects and plants. The development of more environmentally benign control methods, such as biopesticides, has gained attention. This review focuses on methyl benzoate, a natural botanical insecticide that has shown effectiveness against various agricultural, stored product, and urban insect pests. The modes of action and potential effects of methyl benzoate on different arthropods are summarized. The conclusion is that methyl benzoate is a promising candidate for integrated pest management.

Phenolic compounds as controllers of Sitophilus zeamais: A look at the structure-activity relationship

Alfredo Rodriguez et al.

Summary: There are many insect species that cause economic losses by feeding, living, and reproducing in stored food worldwide. Sitophilus zeamais is one of the most damaging insects to stored maize grains. This study evaluated the effects of ten phenolic compounds as bio-insecticides or repellents against S. zeamais. Carvacrol and thymol were found to have insecticidal effects and high inhibition of AChE. The hydroxyl group was identified as important for insecticidal properties and the aromatic ring and its substituent affected the efficacy of the bioinsecticides.

Essential Oils in Urban Insect Management-A Review

S. O. Oladipupo et al.

Summary: The rise of urban populations due to the attractions of city life has led to the proliferation of certain insect pests. As chemical insecticides become less effective and insecticide resistance becomes more prevalent, there is an increasing interest in finding alternative solutions. Natural products from plants, such as essential oils and their components, have shown promise in controlling urban insects, including those resistant to traditional insecticides. However, there is currently no comprehensive synthesis on the management of urban insects using these natural products. This review aims to fill this gap by assessing the extent and impact of using essential oils and their components, providing valuable insights for decision-making and policy development, as well as identifying areas for future research on the sustainable use of essential oils.

Carvacrol Derivatives as Antifungal Agents: Synthesis, Antimicrobial Activity and in Silico Studies on Carvacryl Esters

Jelena Lazarevic et al.

Summary: Chemical modifications of natural monoterpenoids can enhance their biological activities. In this study, a series of esters were synthesized by introducing acyl groups onto the basic scaffold of carvacrol. The structural characterization, antimicrobial testing, and in silico calculation of physico-chemical, pharmacokinetic, and toxicological properties were performed for each compound. The results showed that all the synthesized esters exhibited comparable activity to carvacrol against the fungal strain Aspergilus niger and the yeast Candida albicans. This study also provided valuable information on esters with acid components higher than C9.

New carvacrol and thymol derivatives as potential insecticides: synthesis, biological activity, computational studies and nanoencapsulation

Carolina M. Natal et al.

Summary: New compounds with potential insecticide activity were synthesized by modifying the monoterpenoid phenolic moieties of carvacrol and thymol, resulting in derivatives with different chains and functional groups. Two significantly active molecules were identified, with one showing lower toxicity to human cells. These active molecules likely target insect odorant binding proteins and/or acetylcholinesterase, and can form stable complexes. Liposomes loaded with these compounds showed promising results in terms of encapsulation efficiency and release properties.
