Longitudinal perturbations of plasma nuclear magnetic resonance profiles in neonatal encephalopathy

Mari Merce Cascant-Vilaplana et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers analyzed plasma samples from newborns using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and found that lactate and other substances can discern the degree of brain injury. This is the first longitudinal study on infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and the measurement of lactate confirms its reliability as a biomarker for predicting the severity of brain injury.

The Effectiveness of L-arginine in Clinical Conditions Associated with Hypoxia

Natalia Kurhaluk

Summary: The review summarizes the data on the effectiveness of L-arginine in therapeutic practice for conditions accompanied by different-origin hypoxia over the past 50 years. It aims to analyze the role of nitric oxide in modulating individual physiological reactivity to hypoxia using literature and research data. The review discusses the possibility of addressing methodological conflicts with L-arginine by considering individual physiological reactivity. It highlights genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of adaptation to hypoxia and presents data on the clinical effectiveness of L-arginine in cardiovascular diseases and associated stress disorders.

Candidate neuroinflammatory markers of cerebral autoregulation dysfunction in human acute brain injury

Claudia A. Smith et al.

Summary: The loss of cerebral autoregulation (CA) is a common and detrimental secondary injury mechanism following acute brain injury. Neuroinflammation, particularly inflammation affecting the cerebral vasculature, could be a putative mechanism that causes CA dysfunction. This review provides an overview of CA, its impairment following brain injury, and discusses potential mechanisms and markers related to disturbance of the cerebral blood flow and autoregulation.

Biomarkers of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: a systematic review

Ines Caramelo et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified potential molecules that can be used in the diagnosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in daily clinical practice. Increased serum levels of neuron-specific enolase and S100-calcium-binding protein-B were associated with a worse prognosis in newborns that suffered from perinatal asphyxia.

Integrating Proteomics and Lipidomics for Evaluating the Risk of Breast Cancer Progression: A Pilot Study

Natalia L. Starodubtseva et al.

Summary: Metastasis is a serious and life-threatening condition in breast cancer patients. In this study, the serum proteome and lipidome profiles of BC patients were analyzed. The levels of certain proteins and lipids were found to be correlated with tumor grade, subtypes, and lymph node metastasis. Two accurate classifiers were developed to distinguish between metastatic and non-metastatic BC, achieving 90% accuracy for proteomic features and 80% accuracy for lipidomic features. The best classifier, based on logistic regression and the levels of 11 proteins, showed high sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic performance.

New possibilities for neuroprotection in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Suresh Victor et al.

Summary: Around 0.75 million babies suffer from HIE each year, leading to neurodevelopmental impairment. Therapeutic hypothermia is effective but improvements are needed. Challenges for the next decade include better animal models, industry support, and well-designed clinical trials to enhance treatment outcomes.

The Vannucci Model of Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury in the Neonatal Rodent: 40 years Later

Susan J. Vannucci et al.

Summary: Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain damage is a major cause of mortality and neurological morbidity in infants and children. The Vannucci model, developed in postnatal rats in 1981, is a widely used small animal model for studying the pathogenesis and management of perinatal HI brain damage. It involves unilateral carotid artery ligation combined with subsequent hypoxia, resulting in temporary hemispheric hypoxia-ischemia. This model has been extensively studied and adapted for use in different developmental stages of rodents.

Neonatal multiple organ failure after perinatal asphyxia

Isabel Iribarren et al.

Summary: Perinatal asphyxia can have far-reaching consequences, leading to neonatal encephalopathy and multiple organ failure (MOF). This study aimed to determine the incidence and etiopathogenesis of MOF in the organs most commonly involved following perinatal asphyxia. The study found that MOF associated with perinatal asphyxia is a frequent phenomenon with a significant impact on neonatal morbidity and mortality. It can cause changes not only in the kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal tract but also cardiomyopathy in severe or prolonged cases.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy diagnosis and treatment: a National Survey in China

Zheng Wang et al.

Summary: There is significant heterogeneity in the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in China, with therapeutic hypothermia not yet becoming a standard nationwide. Unproven agents are widely used for HIE treatment, highlighting the need for national standardization and dissemination of therapeutic hypothermia to improve outcomes for affected children.

A Metabolomic Approach in Search of Neurobiomarkers of Perinatal Asphyxia: A Review of the Current Literature

Summary: Perinatal asphyxia and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are associated with high mortality and disability rates, with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) being the only validated treatment. Metabolomics shows promise in improving HIE diagnosis and management, and identifying neonates at risk of developing severe HIE.
