Sex differences in the sustained attention of elementary school children

Barel Efrat et al.

Summary: This study investigates sex differences in sustained attention among children. The results show that boys have faster reaction times, fewer lapses, but more false starts compared to girls. No sex differences were found in sleep patterns. These findings suggest that sex differences should be taken into account in studies of neurobehavioral functioning, particularly sustained attention across different age groups.

Primary School Pupils: Unequal GMC Developmental Pathways in a Single School Year

Mark de Niet et al.

Summary: Gross motor coordination is essential for children's development and participation in physical activities. This study found individual differences in GMC development, with boys outperforming girls in eye-hand coordination and girls outperforming boys in walking backwards. Children with lower baseline scores showed faster development across all grades.

Does physical activity and BMI mediate the association between DCD and internalizing problems in early childhood? A partial test of the Environmental Stress Hypothesis

Yao-Chuen Li et al.

Summary: Young children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) are more likely to experience internalizing problems, such as depression and anxiety, than typically developing (TD) children. While physical activity and BMI were not found to mediate the relationship between DCD and internalizing problems in preschool children, further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms.

A Ten-Week Motor Skills Training Program Increases Motor Competence in Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder

Orifjon Saidmamatov et al.

Summary: The study implemented a 10-week motor skills training program for children with DCD, dividing them into an experimental group and a control group. Results showed significant improvements in motor skills for the experimental group across all domains, with gender not affecting the effectiveness of the intervention program.

Gender Differences on Motor Competence in 5-Year-Old Preschool Children Regarding Relative Age

Ruben Navarro-Paton et al.

Summary: This study found differences in motor competence between 5-year-old boys and girls, with girls performing better in manual dexterity, balance, and overall motor competence. Relative Age Effect was observed in aiming and catching, balance, and total percentile score, with preschool children born in the first semester scoring higher.

High BMI and Low Muscular Fitness Predict Low Motor Competence in School-Aged Children Living in Low-Resourced Areas

Evi Verbecque et al.

Summary: Childhood obesity is a growing concern in Sub-Saharan developing countries, especially in children from low socioeconomic backgrounds whose motor competence, muscular fitness, and BMI have not been well studied. This study found that increased BMI and decreased muscular fitness predicted low motor competence in both Ghanaian and South African children, highlighting the importance of promoting weight control and physical activity to improve motor competence and combat childhood obesity.
