Global longitudinal strain: an early marker for cardiotoxicity in patients treated for breast cancer

D. van der Linde et al.

Summary: This study found that subclinical deterioration of global longitudinal strain (GLS) is a more reliable predictor for left ventricular (LV) dysfunction than three-dimensional (3D) LV ejection fraction (LVEF) in breast cancer patients undergoing anthracycline and trastuzumab treatment.

Global Longitudinal Strain in Cardio-Oncology: A Review

Grzegorz Slawinski et al.

Summary: The assessment of global longitudinal strain (GLS) plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis of anticancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity in cardio-oncology. Baseline left ventricular (LV) GLS and right ventricular (RV) GLS assessments can identify patients at risk for systolic dysfunction and heart failure. Serial echocardiography with GLS assessment should be performed during anticancer therapy to promptly initiate and adjust cardioprotection for subclinical myocardial contractile dysfunction.

Myocardial performance index and cardiovascular diseases

Lutfu Askin et al.

Summary: The Myocardial Performance Index (MPI), also known as the Tei Index, is a non-invasive echocardiographic index that measures the overall performance of the heart by considering both systolic and diastolic function. It is a useful tool for evaluating cardiac function in various clinical conditions. This review aims to summarize the relevant literature, discuss methodology and technical aspects, and provide research recommendations.

Systematic review and updated recommendations for cardiomyopathy surveillance for survivors of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer from the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group

MatthewJ Ehrhardt et al.

Summary: Survivors of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer who were previously treated with anthracycline chemotherapy or radiotherapy that exposed the heart have an increased risk of developing cardiomyopathy. Specialist organizations have endorsed guidelines on cardiac surveillance for these high-risk cancer survivors, as symptomatic cardiomyopathy is typically preceded by asymptomatic changes in heart structure and function. The International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group compiled these guidelines into a uniform set of recommendations applicable to different clinical environments. This systematic review and guideline provide updated recommendations based on evidence published up to September 2020.

Anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity: From pathobiology to identification of molecular targets for nuclear imaging

Jeremy Jong et al.

Summary: Anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity is a common side effect in chemotherapy, and current imaging modalities have limitations in screening for toxicity. Therefore, researchers have studied molecular nuclear imaging strategies to improve the accuracy of detecting cardiotoxicity. Based on the current evidence, molecular nuclear imaging plays an important role in improving patient management.

Cancer Therapy-Related Cardiovascular Complications in Clinical Practice: Current Perspectives

Michal Bohdan et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases and cancer are leading causes of death in Europe and the United States, with extensive overlap and common risk factors. The emerging field of cardio-oncology is gaining attention due to the rising number of patients with both diseases, particularly regarding cardiotoxicity during anti-cancer treatment. Close cooperation between cardiologists and oncologists is essential for optimal treatment.
