Bioinspired antireflective subwavelength nanostructures induced by femtosecond laser for high transparency glass

Haoran Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a femtosecond laser micro-machining technique was used to fabricate biomimic nanostructures on optical glass, inspired by the high transparency of cicada wings, to improve the transmittance of optical devices. The mechanism for the enhancement of transmittance and the design of the artificial structure were explored using a rigorous coupled-wave analysis method. The height, diameter, and period of the nanostructures could be adjusted by controlling the laser-processing parameters, resulting in wide-angle omnidirectional antireflection in the visible band and hydrophobicity properties. These bioinspired nanostructures are expected to be widely used in glass display applications.

Higher Suitability of NbMoTaW over Its Elemental Metals for Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structure/Particle-Aggregate UV-to-MIR Ultrabroadband Absorber

Dongshi Zhang et al.

Summary: The peculiarity and higher suitability of NbMoTaW for femtosecond laser induced LIPSS/particle-aggregate UV-to-MIR ultrabroadband absorber are revealed. The performance of ultrabroadband absorbers can be adjusted by changing the density of NbMoTaW particle aggregates on laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). NbMoTaW-LIPSS decorated by a few particle aggregates is more suitable than LIPSS itself to be used as selective solar absorber, indicating the capacity of deposited particle aggregates to modulate absorbance selectivity. It is deduced that NbMoTaW-RHEA should possess a lower melting temperature than W and a high electron-phonon coupling constant, facilitating nano-structuring/nano-synthesis.

LIPSS Applied to Wide Bandgap Semiconductors and Dielectrics: Assessment and Future Perspectives

Matteo Mastellone et al.

Summary: This article primarily introduces the theoretical models of Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) and their applications in the surface structures of wide bandgap semiconductors and dielectric materials. It discusses the role of radiation surface electromagnetic waves and Surface Plasmon Polaritons in LIPSS formation, along with experimental evidence. It also highlights the use of non-conventional techniques for LIPSS formation to improve surface structure homogeneity and control the electronic properties of materials. These studies are of great significance for applications in innovative devices.

Controlled periodicities of ladder-like structures via femtosecond laser of wavelength from 400 nm to 2200 nm

Md Abu Taher et al.

Summary: This study fabricates femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) with low and high spatial frequencies on a stainless-steel surface simultaneously by varying the wavelength. The results show that the periodicities of both low and high spatial frequency LIPSS can be controlled by the wavelength, and the formation of high spatial frequency LIPSS depends on the primary low spatial frequency LIPSS. These experimental insights are important for understanding and describing the formation of LIPSS.

Generation of Supra-Wavelength Grooves in Femtosecond Laser Surface Structuring of Silicon

Jijil J. J. Nivas et al.

Summary: Extensive research has been conducted on laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), with a focus on sub-wavelength ripples and less on supra-wavelength grooves. This overview discusses recent investigations on the formation of grooves on crystalline silicon by femtosecond laser pulses, including the influence of various experimental parameters and possible mechanisms for groove formation.

Deep-Subwavelength 2D Periodic Surface Nanostructures on Diamond by Double-Pulse Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

Matteo Mastellone et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates, for the first time, the achievement of two-dimensional laser-induced periodic surface structures with deep-subwavelength periodicity on diamond surfaces. The method involves using two temporally delayed and cross-polarized femtosecond-laser pulses to achieve distinctive nanotexturing, which can be controlled by varying the number of pulses. The effective treatment of large areas of diamond surfaces under scanning mode leads to significantly enhanced absorptance in the visible range, paving the way for the development of metasurfaces for future diamond-based optoelectronic devices.
