Effect of strain rate on mechanical response and failure characteristics of horizontal bedded coal under quasi-static loading

Yunpei Liang et al.

Summary: In this paper, the mechanical response and acoustic emission characteristics of coal under quasi-static loading with different strain rates were analyzed. It was found that coal's strength and elastic modulus showed a strain rate effect. The failure of coal involved both tensile and shear failure, with the contribution of shear failure increasing with strain rate. The study also identified a range where the strain rate effect was not significant, known as the strain rate effect invisible area. The research contributes to the understanding and prevention of strain rock bursts induced by high static loading.

Peng-Fei Yin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical response and mechanism of shale specimens under cyclic loading and unloading through experiments and simulations. The strength, deformation characteristics, and damage evolution during the cyclic loading-unloading process are quantified and analyzed. The micro-crack distribution and evolution are further studied based on the simulation results.

Summary: In this study, the observation and analysis of concrete columns repaired with BFRP were conducted through experiments and monitoring techniques. Three damage stages were defined based on the strain energy-based damage index and fractal theory, and the evolution of crack types was effectively revealed using the RA-AF analysis and GMM analysis.

Investigation the effect of freeze-thaw cycle on fracture mode classification in concrete based on acoustic emission parameter analysis

Shuailong Lian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles on the mechanical properties and cracking features of concrete. Uniaxial compression tests are conducted on concrete specimens subjected to different numbers of F-T cycles. Integrated acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques are used to analyze the mechanical characteristics under various F-T cycles and immersion conditions. The results show that the brittleness of the specimens decreases and the ductility increases with increasing F-T cycles. The peak load and elastic modulus decrease gradually, while the peak strain increases. The failure mode changes from shear slipping to shear/mixed cracking with more F-T cycles.

Characterization of shear behavior and damage mechanism of periodic thermal loading sandstone based on NMR technique

Jing Bi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of periodic thermal loading on the shear behavior of sandstone through direct shear tests and acoustic emission techniques. It is found that the shear resistance of samples subjected to periodic heating and cooling is lower compared to continuous heating. The peak shear strength and stiffness are greatly affected by temperature and thermal loading methods, while the ultimate shear strength remains largely unaffected. Analysis of the evolution in pore structure reveals distinct fractal characteristics of mesopores and macropores, which are influenced by heating temperature and periodic thermal loading.

Experimental and numerical investigation of sandstone deformation under cycling loading relevant for underground energy storage

Milad Naderloo et al.

Summary: Underground porous reservoirs are highly suitable for storing green energy in the form of green gases. The geomechanical response of sandstones to cyclic loading plays a crucial role in safe and efficient underground energy storage operations. This study presents an integrated analysis combining experimental and constitutive modeling aspects to investigate sandstones' response to cyclic loading relevant to underground energy storage.

Failure analysis of water-bearing rock under direct tension using acoustic emission

Jun Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of water-weakening effects on the direct tensile failure of marble rocks. The results show that the tensile strength of marble rock decreases significantly with increasing water content, resulting in variable fracture surfaces. The main mechanism for the deterioration of marble rock under direct tension is friction weakening caused by water.

Experimental investigation on fracture behaviors and acoustic emission characteristics of sandstone under different strain rates

Summary: The study found that the uniaxial compressive strength, elasticity modulus, and peak strain of rock are significantly dependent on strain rate. Different strain rates result in varying failure modes and acoustic emission characteristics in rock, while the microscopic fracture morphology plays a crucial role in rock mechanical behaviors.

Cyclic Water Injection Potentially Mitigates Seismic Risks by Promoting Slow and Stable Slip of a Natural Fracture in Granite

Yinlin Ji et al.

Summary: The study investigates the activation of a critically stressed natural fracture in granite under pressure-controlled and volume-controlled monotonic and cyclic water injection. Results show that cyclic injection can lead to aseismic fracture slip at smaller peak slip rates compared to monotonic injection, but continued injection after an unstable shut-in stage could result in rapid and unstable fracture slip.
