A review of experimental apparatus for supercritical CO2 fracturing of shale

Xiufeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) is a promising fracturing fluid for unconventional reservoir stimulation, and laboratory experiments are essential for evaluating its hydraulic parameters and potential. The design of new or improved fracturing apparatuses plays a critical role in determining experimental results, and future research should focus on investigating the mechanism of SC-CO2 fracturing.

Surface characteristics analysis of fractures induced by supercritical CO2 and water through three-dimensional scanning and scanning electron micrography

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the morphology of hydraulic fracture surfaces induced by SC-CO2 and water under open-hole and perforation completion conditions. It was found that the surface area of SC-CO2-induced fractures is larger than water-induced fractures, and the fractal dimension and surface roughness of SC-CO2-induced fractures decrease with increasing perforation angle, while those of water-induced fractures increase. SEM images showed microcracks and particle peeling pits on SC-CO2-induced fracture surfaces, indicating different propagation patterns compared to water-induced fractures.

Characterization of discontinuity surface morphology based on 3D fractal dimension by integrating laser scanning with ArcGIS

Bowen Zheng et al.

Summary: The fractal geometry method has been employed to quantitatively characterize the roughness of rock discontinuity, solving problems such as complicated calculation procedures and an inability to characterize undulation and anisotropy. Through three-dimensional laser scanning and theoretical calculations, an extensive 3D fractal dimension was proposed to comprehensively characterize the roughness, undulation, and anisotropy of rock discontinuity morphology. This method has advantages of simplification, low-time consumption, and high precision compared to current fractal methods.

Geothermal reservoir stimulation through hydro-shearing: an experimental study under conditions close to enhanced geothermal systems

Kc Bijay et al.

Summary: The study found that hydro-shearing in EGS leads to permanent shear slip in fractures, significantly enhancing permeability. Thermal stress at elevated temperatures could also contribute to mechanical crushing of asperities and weak fractures, resulting in more gouge particles.

Development of microcracks in granitic rock by liquid CO2 fracturing

Seong Jun Ha et al.

Summary: In this study, hydraulic fracturing by liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) and water in a granitic specimen was investigated to determine the micro-scale characteristics of generated microcracks. The results showed that LCO2 and water injection produced different fracture characteristics, with LCO2 requiring a greater fluid volume to generate a lower breakdown pressure. The developed microcracks were affected by the fracturing fluid and anisotropic properties of granitic rocks.

Investigation on Reservoir Stimulation Characteristics in Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Formations of China During Hydraulic Fracturing

Yuxiang Cheng et al.

Summary: Geothermal energy, especially from Hot Dry Rock (HDR) reservoirs, is seen as a potential renewable energy source in China. The study investigated the characteristics of HDR geothermal reservoir stimulation and fracture patterns during hydraulic fracturing, using a true triaxial hydraulic fracturing apparatus. Factors affecting breakdown pressure and fracture creation were explored through experiments and numerical simulations, providing valuable insights for field HDR geothermal operations.

Advantages of supercritical CO2 compound fracturing in shale on fracture geometry, complexity and width

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: The study proposes a SC-CO2 compound fracturing method using SC-CO2 as the pad fluid and guar gum fluid as the carrier fluid, which can generate a more complex fracture network for shale gas development. The results show that compound fracturing can increase the fracture complexity compared to SC-CO2 fracturing alone, especially in specimens with vertical bedding planes. The findings demonstrate the feasibility and significance of compound fracturing technology in enhancing shale gas development.
