Leptin treatment has vasculo-protective effects in lipodystrophic mice

Paulina Elena Stuerzebecher et al.

Summary: Lipodystrophy syndromes (LDs) are characterized by adipose tissue loss and metabolic complications. Treatment with recombinant leptin (metreleptin) not only reduces the risk of mortality in LD patients, but also protects endothelial function and identity by reducing the expression of proatherosclerotic cytokine growth/differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) and preventing endothelial to mesenchymal transition (EndMT).

C-reactive protein, immunothrombosis and venous thromboembolism

Caroline Dix et al.

Summary: C-reactive protein (CRP) is not only a marker of inflammation, but also possesses pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic properties. Recent studies have shown that CRP can influence the pathogenesis of atherothrombosis and venous thromboembolism (VTE), particularly in diseases and conditions associated with inflammation. Although the clinical data regarding the utility of CRP in predicting VTE are limited and conflicting, it shows clinical value in predicting recurrence, cancer-associated thrombosis, and COVID-19 in certain subsets. Further research is needed to uncover the direct role of CRP in the pathogenesis of VTE and its potential value in targeting thromboinflammation for prevention and treatment.

Incidence of VTE and Bleeding Among Hospitalized Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

David Jimenez et al.

Summary: The pooled incidence of VTE and bleeding among hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was 17.0% and 7.8% respectively. Factors such as routine screening, critical illness, inclusion of distal DVT and subsegmental PE, and prospective studies were associated with higher rates of VTE. The incidence of bleeding events was sensitive to escalated doses of anticoagulants and the nature of data collection.
