Recent advances in the application of metabolomics for food safety control and food quality analyses

Shubo Li et al.

Summary: Metabolomics, as one of the omics fields, has unique advantages in facilitating the understanding of physiological and pathological activities in biology, physiology, pathology, and food science. This review highlights the current applications of metabolomics in food safety, food authenticity and quality, and food traceability, as well as the comprehensive description of combined use of metabolomics with other omics techniques for foodomics. Lastly, the critical discussion on the latest developments, practical challenges and limitations, and requirements related to the application of metabolomics provides new insight into its application in food analysis.

The effects of different high-fat (lard, soybean oil, corn oil or olive oil) diets supplemented with fructo-oligosaccharides on colonic alkaline phosphatase activity in rats

Yukako Okazaki et al.

Summary: The study suggests that dietary fat types may influence the effect of FOS on colonic luminal environment, including ALP activity, in rats fed a high-fat diet. In the lard and olive oil diet groups, dietary FOS significantly increased colonic ALP activity and the number of Lactobacillus spp. in fecal matter. However, this effect was not observed in the soybean oil and corn oil diet groups.

IDH1 mutations induce organelle defects via dysregulated phospholipids

Adrian Lita et al.

Summary: This study reveals that IDH1(mut) results in an increase in monounsaturated fatty acids and their phospholipids in the endoplasmic reticulum, leading to Golgi and ER dilation. Inhibition of IDH1 mutation or SCD silencing restores ER and Golgi morphology, while D-2HG and oleic acid induces morphological defects in these organelles. Moreover, the overexpression of SCD induced by IDH1(mut) rearranges the distribution of lipids in the organelles of glioma cells, contributing to potential therapeutic implications.

Selection of Vegetable Oils and Frying Cycles Influencing Acrylamide Formation in the Intermittently Fried Beef Nuggets

Siti Nur Syahirah Ahmad et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of different vegetable oils and frying cycles on acrylamide formation in beef nuggets. Oil quality attributes changed during frying cycles, but there was no significant correlation between these attributes and acrylamide concentration. Oil type, rather than frying cycle, significantly affected the acrylamide content in the fried products.

Saturated fatty acids entrap PDX1 in stress granules and impede islet beta cell function

Mu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that saturated fatty acids disrupt nucleocytoplasmic transport and induce stress granule (SG) formation in pancreatic beta cells. The formation of SGs is mediated by the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha (EIF2 alpha) pathway, and may be linked to beta cell dysfunction. Disruption of SG assembly may be a potential therapeutic strategy for treating obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Nathalie Guffon et al.

Summary: Triheptanoin treatment for LC-FAOD patients has shown significant improvements in symptoms, reducing hypoglycemic events, fatigue, and myalgia episodes. It has also led to decreased wheelchair dependency and emergency care, suggesting a positive impact on patients' quality of life.

Understanding the Functional Activity of Polyphenols Using Omics-Based Approaches

Wenjin Si et al.

Summary: Plant polyphenols, the main category of natural active substances, have beneficial effects in preventing diseases and maintaining body health. Foodomics, combining various omics technologies, provides abundant data to study the functional activities of polyphenols. Polyphenols exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor activities, and regulate gut microbiota.
