Using crop modeling to find solutions for wheat diseases: A review

Caroline Fadeke Ajilogba et al.

Summary: Plant diseases pose significant challenges to global food production, leading to hunger and food insecurity. Various solutions have been introduced, including cultural and chemical control, resistant cultivars, and biocontrol. However, each solution has its limitations. Given the changing climate and recurring crop diseases, it is important to implement preventive measures to reduce risks to crop production and alleviate food insecurity.

Mitigation pathways towards climate change: Modelling the impact of climatological factors on wheat production in top six regions of China

Abbas Ali Chandio et al.

Summary: Northern and Southern regions are the main wheat production belts in China. Changes in agro-climatic resources in recent years have posed a threat to staple food production in these regions. This study investigates the long-term effects of climate change and agri-inputs on wheat production in China's top six wheat producing provinces from 1995 to 2020. The findings reveal the negative impact of temperature and positive impact of precipitation on wheat production, as well as the significant decrease in wheat production due to pesticide use and increase due to fertilizer use.

Monitoring climate change, drought conditions and wheat production in Eurasia: the case study of Kazakhstan

Marat Karatayev et al.

Summary: Wheat production in Kazakhstan is vulnerable to climate change and drought, as the country's growing regions in the northern part are reliant on spring-sown rain-fed cultivation. Analysis of climate data from 1950 to 2020 reveals a significant increase in surface temperature, while precipitation trends are not obvious and drought fluctuates. Wheat yields are significantly correlated with drought indices, indicating the potential negative impact of reduced precipitation and increased drought intensity on wheat productivity.

Global crop yields can be lifted by timely adaptation of growing periods to climate change

Sara Minoli et al.

Summary: This study integrates models of farmers' decision making with biophysical crop modeling to simulate the adaptation of crop growing periods and its effect on crop yields. The results show that timely adaptation of growing periods can significantly increase crop yields and reduce negative impacts of climate change.

Climate impact and adaptation to heat and drought stress of regional and global wheat production

Diego N. L. Pequeno et al.

Summary: The study simulated the impacts of climate change on global wheat production and found that climate change is projected to negatively affect global wheat production, especially in developing countries in tropical regions. Introducing new crop genetic traits as an adaptation to climate change improved wheat yield, particularly when combined with additional nitrogen fertilizer. Region-specific adaptation strategies need to be explored to maximize the benefits of adaptations to climate change across the globe.

Rising temperatures and increasing demand challenge wheat supply in Sudan

Toshichika Iizumi et al.

Summary: Climate warming poses challenges for wheat production in Sudan, where demand is expected to triple by 2050. Advanced crop modeling shows that despite efforts to adapt through adjusted sowing dates and heat-tolerant varieties, domestic production share may still decrease in the future. Different regions will require varying rates of yield growth to meet the challenges of climate warming and increased demand.
