Sulfonate-Functionalized AlEgens: Strategic Approaches Beyond Water Solubility for Sensing and Imaging Applications

Ankit Thakuri et al.

Summary: The development of water-soluble aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active light-up probes for sensing and imaging purposes has drawn significant research attention. Introducing SO3 groups in AlEgens (AIE-sulfonates) increases their hydrophilic properties and allows for electrostatic interaction with various analytes, particularly with biospecies having positively charged surfaces. These AIE-sulfonates, including those with a tetraphenylethylene (TPE) moiety, have been designed and synthesized for selective detection of analytes and are also used in cell imaging and OLED applications.

Synthesis and Spectral Properties of Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Push-Pull Chromophores Based On Isoindole Scaffolds

Changjiang Yu et al.

Summary: A new class of tailor-made push-pull isoindole fluorophores has been synthesized using Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. This synthetic strategy allows for the incorporation of various types of electron donors and acceptors, enabling the manipulation of energy gaps and tuning of absorptions and emissions. Most of the N-alkylated isoindole dyes exhibit aggregation-induced emission suitable for bioimaging and solid-state emission with peak emission up to 851 nm.

Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE)-Active Poly(acrylates) for Electrofluorochromic Detection of Nitroaromatic Compounds

Ming Hui Chua et al.

Summary: Two AIE-active poly(acrylates) with triphenylvinyl-functionalized phenylcarbazole and triphenylamine pendants were synthesized. They showed fluorescence quenching in the presence of nitroaromatics and under applied voltages. Surprisingly, the fluorescence turned on at high applied voltages (> +1.0 V), demonstrating a promising approach for EFC detection of nitroaromatic explosives.

Effect of conjugation on the optoelectronic properties of pyrazine-based push-pull chromophores: Aggregation-induced emission, solvatochromism, and acidochromism

Hyung-Ha Park et al.

Summary: A series of pyrazine-based bipodal molecules with multi-stimuli response were synthesized via Suzuki and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions, showing different optical, thermal, and electrochemical properties depending on modifications to their endcapped donor-acceptor units and ?-conjugation extension. The molecules emit fluorescence from blue to orange depending on the electron-donating substituents, and exhibit solvent-dependent emission with a linear correlation on Dimroth-Reichardt plots. The study also found enhanced emission in aggregates, suggesting potential for developing promising multi-stimuli responsive fluorescent materials.

Insights into Optical Probes Based on Aggregation-Induced Emission: from Restriction of Intramolecular Motions to Dark State

Shuai Huang et al.

Summary: AIE fluorophores have attracted attention for biological imaging, detection, and material fabrications since the concept was introduced in 2001. The luminescence mechanism of AIE fluorophores is mainly explained by the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM). Understanding the dark state of AIE molecules is crucial for fundamental understanding and development in aggregate science.

Summary: Understanding the luminescence mechanism is crucial for the development of AIE materials. Weak intermolecular excitonic coupling in AIEgens challenges conventional models, leading to new theoretical proposals. Multiscale computational approaches provide insights into radiative and nonradiative decay processes, offering potential for predicting molecular design.

The application of amide units in the construction of neutral functional dyes for mitochondrial staining

Wei Ma et al.

Summary: A new class of neutral fluorescent dyes with mitochondrial staining capacity was developed using a series of functional dyes obtained from Nile Red and coumarin via Suzuki coupling reactions. These dyes showed high fluorescence quantum yields and excellent photostability in organic solvents, and exhibited low cytotoxicity. Through confocal fluorescence experiments, it was demonstrated that modified dyes successfully targeted mitochondria in HeLa cancer cells.
