4-Aminothiophenol Photodimerization Without Plasmons

Ivano Alessandri

Summary: This study observed the photoreaction of PATP to DMAB in the absence of any plasmonic mediators. Using confocal microRaman spectroscopy, the reaction progress was investigated in different plasmon-free contexts, both aerobic and anaerobic, providing a new interpretation based on direct laser-induced activation of singlet oxygen species as the cause of PATP dimerization.

Chemical Recycling of Polystyrene to Valuable Chemicals via Selective Acid-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidation under Visible Light

Zhiliang Huang et al.

Summary: This study describes a light-driven, acid-catalyzed protocol for the chemical recycling of polystyrene waste, which can convert waste into valuable chemicals under environmentally friendly conditions. The involvement of reactive oxygen species, singlet oxygen, and the potential role of an adduct between polystyrene and an acid catalyst as a photosensitizer are investigated.

Photocatalytic Dissolution of Precious Metals by TiO2 through Photogenerated Free Radicals

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the selectivity and solvation effects observed in the photocatalytic dissolution of precious metals. The radicals generated in photocatalysis are found to be the key active species in the reaction. The presence of cyano functional group in the solvent drives the dissolution of gold, while chlorine radicals are crucial for the dissolution of platinum group precious metals. The catalytic properties of different precious metals result in selective dissolution by promoting different transformations of functional groups.

Review of Chemical Reactivity of Singlet Oxygen with Organic Fuels and Contaminants

Jomana Al-Nu'airat et al.

Summary: Singlet oxygen, a form of reactive oxygen species produced by excitation of molecular triplet oxygen, has high energy compared to ground state O-2, initiating low-temperature oxidation. Its reactivity has inspired diverse applications in chemical, biochemical, and combustion phenomena. This review emphasizes its natural occurrences, production techniques, and reactivity with organic fuels and contaminants, as well as computational efforts in developing mechanistic insights into its reactions.

Photoinduced formation of persistent free radicals, hydrogen radicals, and hydroxyl radicals from catechol on atmospheric particulate matter

Linjun Qin et al.

Summary: Catechol is capable of producing environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), with CaO, CuO, and Fe2O3 promoting their formation. Additionally, the photochemical reactions of catechol resulted in the discovery of hydroxyl free radicals, hydrogen free radicals, and superoxide anions, which have adverse effects on human health.

Cyclodextrins enable indirect ultrasensitive Raman detection of polychlorinated biphenyls captured by plasmonic bubbles

Irene Vassalini et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the indirect ultrasensitive detection of polychlorinated biphenyls in water using the Raman signals of silver-cyclodextrin supracrystals resulting from drying-induced aggregation of plasmonic alginate bubbles. Principal component analysis extended the detection limit to 1 ng/L, which is two orders of magnitude lower than current legislation requires.
