Association of Genetic and Allelic Variants of Von Willebrand Factor (VWF), Glutathione S-Transferase and Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha with Ischemic Stroke Susceptibility and Progression in the Saudi Population

Mohammed M. Jalal et al.

Summary: Stroke is a major cerebrovascular disease that has significant impacts on patients and society as a whole. The interaction of certain gene variations with high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking may increase the incidence of ischemic stroke. This study examined the associations of SNPs in VWF, GSTs, and TNF-alpha genes with stroke in the Saudi population, and found significant differences in genotypes between stroke cases and healthy controls. The results suggest a strong association between certain gene variants and susceptibility to ischemic stroke in the Saudi population, but further studies are needed to confirm these findings and understand their effects on proteins.

Summary: This study investigates the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the GCK, MIR-196A-2, and MIR-423 genes with susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in patients from two regions of Saudi Arabia. The results suggest that genetic variations in these genes may be potentially associated with an increased risk of T2DM.

Serum Cytokines Predict the Severity of Coronary Artery Disease Without Acute Myocardial Infarction

Sheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between serum cytokines and the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with non-acute myocardial infarction (AMI). It found that serum levels of IL-4, IL-12p70, IL-17, and IFN-alpha were significantly lower in the severe CAD group compared to the non-severe CAD group. IL-12p70 and IL-17 were negatively correlated with the severity of CAD. The study also identified IL-12p70, IL-17, HDL-C, gender, and diabetes as independent predictors of severe CAD.

Association Between Insulin Resistance and Cardiovascular Disease Risk Varies According to Glucose Tolerance Status: A Nationwide Prospective Cohort Study

Tiange Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the interaction between insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in different glucose tolerance statuses. Using data from the China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort Study, the researchers found that glucose intolerance exacerbates the association between insulin resistance and CVD risk. Both insulin resistance and obesity in individuals with prediabetes were associated with higher risks of CVD, while insulin resistance remained a risk factor for CVD in individuals with diabetes, regardless of obesity status.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk assessment: An American Society for Preventive Cardiology clinical practice statement

Nathan D. Wong et al.

Summary: The risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) varies significantly in both generally healthy individuals and those with known ASCVD. Preventive cardiology focuses on assessing baseline ASCVD risk and using lifestyle management and pharmacologic therapy to reduce risk based on risk scores. Additional factors like traditional risk factors, novel biomarkers, and inflammatory factors can further assess ASCVD risk, especially in borderline or intermediate risk cases. Accurate risk assessment is crucial in targeting preventive therapies for ASCVD.
