Effect of Abiotic Stresses from Drought, Temperature, and Density on Germination and Seedling Growth of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

Akos Tarnawa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the germination and seedling growth of barley seeds under deficits in moisture and temperature stress. The results show that temperature has a significant impact on germination time and seedling development, with an ideal range of 15-20 degrees Celsius. High temperatures negatively affect germination percentage, while low temperatures affect germination and seedling growth rate. Germination starts at 130% water of the thousand kernel weight, while the ideal water range for seedling development is wider. Seed size determines germination water requirements, suggesting an optimal range of 720%-1080% of the thousand kernel weight. A density of 10 seeds per 9 cm petri dish may be preferable. Treating seeds with antifungal solutions or applying antifungal substances at 5 ppm significantly prevents fungal growth. This study is innovative in terms of stress levels, crop species, experimental and measurement techniques compared to previous research.

Effects of Elevated Temperature on Root System Development of Two Lupine Species

Virgilija Gaveliene et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of elevated temperature on the growth, morphology, and spatial orientation of lupine roots, as well as the formation of root architecture. The results showed that the two lupine species responded differently to the temperature increase. Elevated temperature negatively affected the growth and spatial orientation of Lupinus polyphyllus, while promoting root development in L. luteus. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential impact of global warming on the invasiveness of these lupine species.

Crop Root Responses to Drought Stress: Molecular Mechanisms, Nutrient Regulations, and Interactions with Microorganisms in the Rhizosphere

Jian Kang et al.

Summary: Roots are crucial for crop adaptation to drought. This article reviews the molecular mechanisms underlying the morphological, physiological, and metabolic responses of typical crop roots to drought stress, as well as the regulation of soil nutrients and microorganisms. Key findings include the regulation of root growth and architecture by essential genes and metabolic processes, the important role of abscisic acid in regulating crop root growth under drought, and the impact of nutrient availability on crop root responses to water status. The article also explores the feedback between plant and soil microbial responses to drought and the potential for manipulating rhizosphere microbes to improve crop resilience to water stress.

Dissection of Drought Tolerance in Upland Cotton Through Morpho-Physiological and Biochemical Traits at Seedling Stage

Zobia Zahid et al.

Summary: The study highlighted the impact of water scarcity on cotton growth and productivity, emphasizing the urgent need for a solution. Through evaluating 23 genotypes for drought tolerance at the seedling stage, significant differences were found in morphological and physiological traits, with interactions between genotype and water regime affecting traits like root length, shoot length, excised leaf water loss, and stomatal conductance. Positive correlations were found between transpiration rate and relative water content, as well as between relative water content and photosynthesis, under drought conditions. Negative correlations were found between stomatal conductance and shoot length, as well as between stomatal conductance and photosynthesis. These findings suggest potential indicators for differentiating drought-tolerant genotypes and the possibility of developing breeding strategies using specific varieties such as NIAB-135, NIAB-512, and CIM-554.

Association Mapping of Verticillium Wilt Disease in a Worldwide Collection of Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Adem Bardak et al.

Summary: This study aimed to discover genetic markers associated with verticillium wilt in cotton. Through association mapping analysis, several SNP markers were identified to be associated with pathotypes and disease severity index, which could potentially be used in Marker Assisted Selection breeding for disease resistance in cotton.
