Addressing phase of population cycle and spatial scale is key to understand vole abundance in crop field margins: Implications for managing a cyclic pest species

Aimara Planillo et al.

Summary: In simplified agricultural landscapes, common voles can become agricultural pests due to their high abundance. This study aimed to identify the margin variables that determine vole population response and the spatial scale at which this response can be managed. Vole abundance was sampled in field margins in two replicated areas of north-western Spain over five years. The results showed that the broader spatial scale accounted better for vole abundance response, with vegetation structure having the strongest effect during the peak phase of the population cycle. Nearby crops did not have a clear effect on vole abundance in the models.

From pattern to process? Dual travelling waves, with contrasting propagation speeds, best describe a self-organised spatio-temporal pattern in population growth of a cyclic rodent

Summary: The dynamics of cyclic populations distributed in space are influenced by synchronising factors and the limited dispersal of destabilising factors. However, limited empirical evidence exists on how synchronisation and activation-inhibition processes act together.

The adequacy of alfalfa crops as an agri-environmental scheme: A review of agronomic benefits and effects on biodiversity

David Gonzalez del Portillo et al.

Summary: Alfalfa crops, as a part of agri-environmental schemes, can provide benefits for biodiversity, such as food resources for endangered birds and improving ecological processes in surrounding crops. However, they may also have negative impacts on bird nest destruction and surrounding crops, so management should be adjusted according to different taxonomic or functional groups.

Management of the Common Vole in the Czech Lands: Historical and Current Perspectives

Radek Aulicky et al.

Summary: The aim of this paper was to map the historical development of the monitoring and control practices of the common vole in the Czech Republic. Published records of vole population outbreaks and heavy crop damage have been documented since the turn of the 20th century. Currently, only six preparations with zinc phosphide as the active ingredient are registered in the CR for vole control.

Influence of crop type on common vole abundance in Central European agroecosystems

Marta Heroldova et al.

Summary: Permanent and perennial crops, such as alfalfa and clover, provide the most abundant habitat for the common vole in Central Europe, while winter rape is also a preferred crop for them. The common vole population remains high in permanent and perennial crops during autumn and winter, but is smaller in winter cereals. Fluctuations in BI of common voles in different crops over a 20-year period show significant synchronisation, suggesting that permanent crops can serve as a good indicator for predicting species density and future development.
