In-situ membrane fouling control and performance improvement by adding materials in anaerobic membrane bioreactor: A review

Mohammad Nabi et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is a promising technology for wastewater treatment, but membrane fouling remains a major challenge. This study reviews the use of different materials to control membrane fouling and improve anaerobic digestion in AnMBR. The mechanisms of membrane fouling control, such as changes in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and soluble microbial products (SMPs), material properties, stimulation of antifouling microbes, and alteration in substrate properties, are discussed. Future research should focus on material-mediated AnMBR applications, including microbial product composition changes, quorum quenching replacement, and molecular-based studies on EPSs and SMPs.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Textile Dye on Blended Cellulose Acetate Membranes

Abdullah M. Asiri et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the degradation performance of natural cellulose acetate membranes filled with ZnO nanostructures. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) using UV light was studied. The results showed that the cellulose acetate membranes filled with ZnO nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic activity under UV light, leading to better degradation of methylene blue and significant potential for practical applications.

Recent Mitigation Strategies on Membrane Fouling for Oily Wastewater Treatment

Nur Fatihah Zulkefli et al.

Summary: The discharge of large amounts of oily wastewater has raised concerns in the scientific community. Membrane filtration is a commonly used method for treating oily wastewater due to its stability, convenience handling, and durability. However, membrane fouling, which affects the performance efficiency of the membrane, continues to be a challenge. This review focuses on the strategies to reduce membrane fouling from oily wastewater and provides insights into different fouling mechanisms and mitigation strategies.

Goekhan Balcioglu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the AnMBR system could operate efficiently at an OLR of 4.4 kg COD m-3 d-1, with negative effects on membrane filtration performance observed at higher OLR levels. Membrane fouling was attributed to cake layer formation consisting of protein and carbohydrate, as analyzed through various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques.

Summary: Baker's yeast industries generate highly polluted effluents, and anaerobic treatment is commonly used to treat them. However, challenges exist in biomass retention and COD compliance. A pilot scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor showed efficient COD removal for vinasse from a BYI, but also experienced issues with permeate quality due to the passage of inert organic compounds through the membrane.

Operational load enhancement for an anaerobic membrane bioreactor through ethanol fermentation pretreatment of food waste

Jin Sun et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the performance of ethanol fermentation pretreatment (EP) for food waste in achieving high-load anaerobic digestion operation using an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). By increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) and maintaining a low propionic acid accumulation, the methane content in biogas was significantly improved. Additionally, the study showed that primary methanogens were tolerant to ammonia inhibition, leading to improved buffering capacity at high load, and identified the abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in AnMBR through 16S rRNA sequence analysis. The results suggest that the EP contributes to creating a virtuous cycle by maintaining a lower hydrogen partial pressure and achieving ultra-high load in the system.
