Biosensor detection of airborne respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2

Lane E. Breshears et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the background and characteristics of airborne SARS-CoV-2 transmission and proposes a need for continued research into handheld and rapid methods for sensitive collection and detection of airborne viruses. It also summarizes the publications on biosensor technology that may be applied to the detection of airborne SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses.

Miniaturized Paper-Based Smartphone Biosensor for Differential Diagnosis of Wild-type Pseudorabies Virus Infection versus Vaccination Immunization

Liping Huang et al.

Summary: A miniaturized paper-based smartphone biosensor detection system was developed for differential diagnosis of wild-type pseudorabies virus infection versus vaccination immunization. The method demonstrated excellent sensitivity and selectivity, with a high agreement rate (98%) with the most widely used commercial gE-ELISA kit in laboratory evaluations, showing great promise as an on-site differential diagnosis tool.

Airborne transmission of respiratory viruses

Chia C. Wang et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of traditional respiratory virus transmission pathways, highlighting the need for updates. Improved understanding of aerosol transmission through studies of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection calls for a reassessment of major transmission pathways for other respiratory viruses, enabling better control measures to reduce airborne transmission.

Wide Application of Minimally Processed Saliva on Multiple RT-qPCR Kits for SARS-CoV-2 Detection in Indonesia

Caroline Mahendra et al.

Summary: Saliva has emerged as an attractive sample matrix for detecting SARS-CoV-2 due to its stability and convenience. Research in Indonesia demonstrated that the target genes of SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in saliva specimens, and a processing method bypassing RNA extraction has been developed, showing wide applicability across various workflows. Overall agreement rates compared to nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs improved with the use of a saliva sampling device, reaching 97% convenience and agreement.
