The role of different sensory organs in the feeding behavior of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis)

Qing Chen et al.

Summary: This study observed the food preference of Chinese mitten crab and the functions of different sensory organs in detecting food sources. It found that the crab preferred the muscle of Bellamy aquadrata and that the ablation of antennule and leg setae impaired its ability to explore food. Additionally, the ablation of mouthpart setae affected the crab's judgment of food quality and manipulation time. However, the crab showed no preference for food color.

Color variation in signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus

Roberto Sacchi et al.

Summary: External coloration in animals is influenced by genetics, epigenetics, and color perception mechanisms. The balancing act between camouflage and communication in crustaceans has led to a variety of responses. Patterns of coloration in Pacifastacus leniusculus suggest a compromise between camouflage and communication, with potential roles for carotenoids in intraspecific communication.

A combination of six psychoactive pharmaceuticals at environmental concentrations alter the locomotory behavior of clonal marbled crayfish

Md Shakhawate Hossain et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) are widely present in aquatic environments worldwide and are considered emerging contaminants. This study investigated the effects of concurrent exposure to six psychoactive PhACs on the locomotory behavior and life history traits of clonal marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis. The results suggest that environmental concentrations of the tested compounds in combination can alter the behavior of non-target aquatic organisms, potentially disrupting ecosystem processes.

Innate visual discrimination abilities of zebrafish larvae

Elia Gatto et al.

Summary: The study revealed that even at the larval stage, zebrafish have relatively sophisticated visual discrimination abilities, being able to distinguish between different colors, shapes, orientations, and numerosities. These innate discrimination abilities, independent of experience, likely contribute to improving larval survival by recognizing biologically relevant stimuli.
