Effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on marine and freshwater microalgae - A review

Hiba Ben Othman et al.

Summary: This article provides the first synthetic review of the effects of PAHs on microalgae in experimental studies and aquatic ecosystems. Microalgae show different sensitivities to PAHs and photosynthesis, the key process carried out by microalgae, is the most impacted by PAH exposure. The effects of PAHs depend on dose, species, and environmental factors. Natural microalgal communities appear to be more sensitive to PAH contamination than microalgae in culture. The precise and accurate assessment of PAHs toxicity to microalgae will benefit from more rigorously designed experimental studies.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water environment: A review on toxicity, microbial biodegradation, systematic biological advancements, and environmental fate

Madhumitha Vijayanand et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major class of organic pollutants with significant health and environmental concerns. Recent research has focused on the degradation mechanisms and microbial degradation of PAHs. Advances in analytical biochemistry and genetically engineered technologies have improved the efficiency of PAHs' breakdown and facilitated the development of new bioremediation techniques. This review provides insights into the degradation of PAHs in the aquatic environment by halophilic archaea, bacteria, algae, and fungi, and discusses the removal mechanisms of PAHs in the marine/aquatic environment.

Variations in the concentration, source and flux of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary: Implications for anthropogenic impacts

Yali Li et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the variations in distribution, source composition, mass inventory, and burial flux of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) surface sediments from 2011 to 2019 to investigate the impact of anthropogenic activities. The total concentrations of PAHs in 2019 were at a medium level compared to other global bays/estuaries/coastal areas and decreased by about 50% compared to 2011. The dominant source of PAHs shifted from petroleum to traffic emissions, attributed to the transformation of energy source structure in the Pearl River Delta. The decreasing PAH concentration was related to sediment coarsening and decline of total organic carbon. These findings can be applicable to other estuarine environments influenced by human activities.

Assessment of a New Approach Method for Grouped Chemical Hazard Estimation: The Toxicity-Normalized Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSDn)

Faith N. Lambert et al.

Summary: New approach methods are being developed to address the challenges of reducing animal testing and assessing risks to the diversity of species in aquatic environments. The toxicity-normalized species sensitivity distribution (SSDn) approach is a novel method for developing compound-specific hazard concentrations. This method shows promise for developing statistically robust hazard concentrations when adequate taxonomic representation is not available for a single chemical.

Determination and distribution of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water samples from Blood and Mokolo Rivers in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Tumelo Monty Mogashane et al.

Summary: The quality of aquatic ecosystems has been increasingly challenging to maintain due to the introduction of toxic organic compounds from natural and human activities. This study aimed to determine the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water of Blood and Mokolo Rivers in South Africa. The researchers used liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method to extract PAHs and gas chromatograph-flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) to quantify sixteen PAHs in the water. Higher levels of PAHs were found in Mokolo River, while lower concentrations were observed in Blood River. The diagnostic ratios indicated that the PAHs in both rivers were likely pyrogenic in origin. The recorded Toxic Equivalence Quotient (TEQ) values suggested that the water from both rivers had relatively low toxicity risk.

A review on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons distribution in freshwater ecosystems and their toxicity to benthic fauna

Fatima Jesus et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hazardous pollutants that are widely present in the environment and can accumulate in sediment, posing a threat to benthic communities in freshwater environments. This review provides an overview of the distribution of PAHs in freshwater environments and their toxicity to benthic fauna, and highlights the need for further research on the environmental toxicity of PAHs in combination with other stressors.

Deriving the predicted no effect concentrations of 35 pesticides by the QSAR-SSD method

Peng Huang et al.

Summary: The widespread use of pesticides raises concerns about their impact on the environment and human health. This study developed a new method using QSAR and SSD models to assess the environmental risks of 35 pesticides. By combining these models, reliable predicted no effect concentrations (PNEC) were derived, even when there was limited toxicity data available for certain chemicals.

Deriving freshwater guideline values for neonicotinoid insecticides: Implications for water quality guidelines and ecological risk assessment

Yolina Yu Lin Wang et al.

Summary: The increased use of neonicotinoid insecticides in aquatic environments poses a significant threat to non-target freshwater species. However, there is a critical need to develop water quality guidelines and conduct ecological risk assessment of different neonicotinoids. In this study, acute and chronic guideline values were derived for six neonicotinoids based on toxicity data, and ecological risk assessment was conducted in global freshwater ecosystems.

Summary: This study compared the mPNEC values derived by the IA method and the CA method based on SSD models, finding that the mPNEC values obtained by the IA method were generally more conservative, especially for commonly used distribution functions. This provides a new direction for the application of the IA model in risk assessment and enriches the framework of mixture risk assessment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface waters from the seven main river basins of China: Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and potential risk assessment

Haiyan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, long-term measurements of PAHs in surface waters of seven river basins across China were reported. The pollution level of PAHs was higher in North China than in South China, with coal and biomass combustion identified as the main contributors. Some individual PAH concentrations exceeded environmental quality standards, and certain river basins were found to be at moderate or high risk of contamination.
