On the importance of longer-term exposure to stressors- A critical review and proposal for multigenerational testing in standard soil invertebrates

B. Guimaraes et al.

Summary: Standard laboratory tests, although feasible and providing robust results, may underestimate the potential effects of prolonged exposures to stressors, especially persistent contaminants. Recent studies have focused on prolonged exposure, but with varying test designs. It is recommended to include long-term tests in existing regulatory requirements and adapt the designs for representative soil invertebrate species.

Microplastics in terrestrial ecosystem: Sources and migration in soil environment

U. Surendran et al.

Summary: Plastics, especially microplastics in soils, are a severe global environmental issue. However, research on microplastic pollution in soils and sediments has been neglected compared to marine environments. This review discusses the production, consumption, pathways, and management of plastics and microplastics in soil environments, as well as the challenges and limitations of plastic alternatives. It also highlights the gaps in knowledge regarding the sources and effects of microplastics on soil properties and soil trophic transfer in food chains. The review provides insights on measures to alleviate the potential risks of microplastic pollution in soils and ecosystem health.

Nanoplastics induce more severe multigenerational life-history trait changes and metabolic responses in marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis: Comparison with microplastics

Xuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of micro/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) on marine rotifer, and found that 70 nm NPs significantly suppressed population growth and negatively affected life-history traits. The smaller the size of the plastic particles, the stronger the toxicity to the rotifers. The study also proposed that metabolomics was powerful to explore the toxicity mechanisms of MPs/NPs.

Multi-generation exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics showed no major adverse effects in Daphnia magna

Margit Heinlaan et al.

Summary: This study examines the long-term impacts of nanoplastics exposure on freshwater crustaceans, specifically Daphnia magna. The results show that at a concentration of 1 mg/L, nanoplastics had little effect on the adult organisms but increased fertility in the third generation. In contrast, mesoporous SiO2 of similar size induced high mortality and decreased fertility and size. Overall, this study suggests that synthetic nanoparticles of different chemistries may disrupt the energy balance of D. magna through multi-generation exposure.

Nanoplastics in the soil environment: Analytical methods, occurrence, fate and ecological implications

Raquel Perez-Reveron et al.

Summary: Soils are crucial for ecosystem sustainability, but they are facing a serious threat due to the high levels of plastic pollution. Plastics can alter soil properties and impact the biota, especially when they break down into microplastics and nanoplastics. The transport and degradation of nanoplastics in soils are influenced by various factors, including soil properties, human activities, and interactions with other organisms. However, the small size of nanoplastics makes it challenging to sample, identify, and quantify them in soils. Furthermore, their uptake by plants and ingestion by soil animals can lead to morphological deformities, organ damage, and physiological malfunctions, as well as potential risks to the food chain. This review aims to provide an overview of the latest research on the determination, occurrence, fate, and effects of nanoplastics in soils, with a focus on their ecological implications.

Individual and combined multigenerational effects induced by polystyrene nanoplastic and glyphosate in Daphnia magna (Strauss, 1820)

Diego Jose Nogueira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute and multigenerational effects of polystyrene nanoplastic (PSNP) and glyphosate (Gly) on the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna. The interactions between these compounds were mathematically predicted and evaluated using multiple toxicological endpoints. The results indicated that the combined individual toxicities of Gly and PSNP were increased when they were present as a mixture. The mixture also caused changes in mobility, ROS production, and reproduction parameters in Daphnia magna. These findings provide important information on the interaction of hydrophilic organic and nanoplastic pollutants in aqueous ecosystems.

Polystyrene nanoplastics penetrate across the blood-brain barrier and induce activation of microglia in the brain of mice

Shan Shan et al.

Summary: The study found that 50 nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) could pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and accumulate in the brains of mice, leading to activation of microglia and damage to neurons. In vitro studies also showed that PS-NPs could be internalized by cells and caused the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), activation of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-kappa B), secretion of tumor necrosis factors alpha (TNF-alpha), and cell death.

Nanoplastics transport to the remote, high-altitude Alps

Dusan Materic et al.

Summary: Plastic materials are increasingly produced worldwide, with a large portion being discarded and breaking down into microplastics and nanoplastics in the environment. High concentrations of nanoplastics, mainly polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate, were found at a high-altitude Alpine observatory. Regional and long-range transport of nanoplastics from urban areas is suggested, with significant toxicological concerns raised due to the extensive deposition of nanoplastics on snow surfaces.
