Adverse childhood experiences are associated with vascular changes in adolescents that are risk factors for future cardiovascular disease

Cailin E. E. Kellum et al.

Summary: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and indicators of future CVD risk, such as vascular stiffness. The impact of ACEs during adolescence is unclear, and studying the relationship between ACEs and blood pressure and vascular function is important for developing prevention strategies.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Tobacco Use Patterns Among Adults in the United States: Exploring sex differences

Olatokunbo Osibogun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sex differences in the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and dual use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes. Although no statistically significant interaction by sex was found, a greater number of ACEs were associated with higher odds of different tobacco use patterns among females and males. Therefore, it is important to develop appropriate, tailored trauma-informed intervention strategies for females and males.

Adverse childhood experiences and other risk factors associated with adolescent and young adult vaping over time: a longitudinal study

Janique Fortier et al.

Summary: This study examined the risk factors associated with vaping among adolescents and young adults, and found that parental smoking/vaping, adverse childhood experiences, and other factors were associated with increased likelihood of vaping. These findings highlight the importance of early prevention and provide insights for intervention strategies.

Assessment of Patterns in e-Cigarette Use Among Adults in the US, 2017-2020

Ellen Boakye et al.

Summary: This study examined recent patterns of e-cigarette use among adults in the US. The prevalence of current e-cigarette use slightly decreased from 2018 to 2020, especially among young adults aged 18 to 20 years. However, the prevalence of daily e-cigarette use consistently increased, particularly among young adults aged 21 to 24 years.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Cardiovascular Risk among Young Adults: Findings from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

Dylan B. Jackson et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and cardiovascular health among young adults in the United States using data from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The findings suggest that young adults with a greater number of ACEs have a higher likelihood of having moderate to high cardiovascular risk. Poor mental health and cumulative disadvantage play a significant role in explaining this association. These findings highlight the importance of prevention efforts targeting cardiovascular risk in young adulthood.

Association of Adverse Childhood Experiences With Cardiovascular Disease Later in Life A Review

Lucas C. Godoy et al.

Summary: ACEs, which encompass abuse, household dysfunction, and neglect, chronically activate the stress response system and lead to dysfunction in autonomic, neuroendocrine, and inflammatory pathways. Adults with 4 or more ACEs have over a 2-fold higher risk of developing CVD and almost 2-fold higher risk of premature mortality. Strategies for CVD prevention through ACE management in adults lack sufficient evidence, highlighting the need for better approaches to mitigate the health consequences of ACEs.

Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences as Predictors of Cigarette and E-Cigarette Use

Mary P. Martinasek et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences, tobacco use, mental health, and community health. Findings showed high adverse childhood experiences were associated with current cigarette smoking and E-cigarette use, with parental divorce, mental illness and alcoholism being common stressors. High adverse childhood experiences were prevalent in marginalized individuals, with emotional and physical abuse being the most common stressors in this group. Additionally, social and community health were inversely related to tobacco use.

Systematic Review of Electronic Cigarette Use (Vaping) and Mental Health Comorbidity Among Adolescents and Young Adults

Timothy D. Becker et al.

Summary: The prevalence of electronic cigarette use among adolescents and young adults has increased significantly over the past decade. While associations between traditional cigarette use and mental health problems are well-established, the relationship between EC use and mental health comorbidities remains unclear. Existing literature suggests that youth EC use is linked to greater mental health issues, particularly among adolescents, but well-designed longitudinal studies are needed to explore the long-term mental health consequences of EC use.
