Arsenic in the hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata: A review of benefits, toxicity, and metabolism

Fei Zhao et al.

Summary: In this review, the beneficial effects of arsenic (As) in P. vittata, including growth promotion, elemental defense, and other potential benefits, are highlighted. The mechanisms of As coping in P. vittata, such as uptake, reduction, efflux, translocation, and sequestration/detoxification, are also discussed. It is hypothesized that P. vittata has evolved strong capacities for As uptake and translocation to obtain beneficial effects, leading to the accumulation of high As concentrations.

Review on the interactions of arsenic, iron (oxy)(hydr)oxides, and dissolved organic matter in soils, sediments, and groundwater in a ternary system

Adeleh Aftabtalab et al.

Summary: High concentrations of arsenic in groundwater are primarily influenced by arsenic-rich sediments underground. Various processes drive the mobilization of arsenic in aquatic ecosystems, with dissolved arsenic exhibiting high affinity for dissolved organic matter. Understanding the complex interactions and biogeochemical cycling of arsenic, dissolved organic matter, and iron oxides is essential for preventing arsenic contamination spread in aquatic resources.

The effects of acidification on arsenic concentration and speciation in offshore shallow water system

Jinfeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The effects of acidification on speciation and transportation of arsenic in shallow seawater system were investigated through lab scale acidification simulation experiments. The results showed that acidification increased the concentration of DIAs, As5+, and As3+ in the overlying water, while decreasing the ratio of As5+/As3+. Acidification also facilitated the transport of more DIAs into the overlying water from sediments or suspended particulate matters, favoring the existence of As3+.

Mobilization of As, Fe, and Mn from Contaminated Sediment in Aerobic and Anaerobic Conditions: Chemical or Microbiological Triggers?

Cherie L. DeVore et al.

Summary: We conducted an integrated study combining aqueous chemistry, spectroscopy, and microbiology techniques to investigate the release of arsenic, iron, and manganese from contaminated sediments under different aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Our results showed that the highest concentrations of these metals were released under anaerobic conditions with the addition of an exogenous electron donor. XANES analyses confirmed the reduction of arsenic under anaerobic conditions. Additionally, the release of these metals after a reaction with phosphate was significantly lower compared to experiments amended with glucose.

Adsorption and desorption behavior of arsenite and arsenate at river sediment-water interface

Kien Thanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption and desorption behavior of arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] on river sediment, and found that the adsorption capacity of sediment was higher for As(V) than for As(III). Adsorption of both As(III) and As(V) was favored in acidic to neutral conditions and on finer sediment particles, while sediment organic matter had marginal effect on adsorption capacity.

Distribution of metals in water, sediment and fish tissue. Consequences for human health risks due to fish consumption in Lake Hawassa, Ethiopia

Bealemlay Abebe Melake et al.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution of metals and metalloids in water, sediment, and fish tissues of Lake Hawassa in Ethiopia and assesses the resulting health and ecological risks. The results show that the metal concentrations in water do not have a potential adverse effect on aquatic life, but certain metals exceed the probable effect concentration in sediment, suggesting potential toxicity to aquatic organisms. Fish store more metals in their liver than in their muscle, and different fish species have varying levels of metal accumulation. Positive correlations among metals in water and sediment indicate a potential common pollution source.

Multiple Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Water and Sediment in Taihu Lake, China

Jiwei Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contents and spatial distributions of eight typical heavy metals (HMs) in Taihu Lake and evaluated the potential ecological and health risks they pose. The results showed that there were ecological risks of copper, nickel, and lead in the surface water, while the risks of cadmium and mercury in the sediments were moderate. The sediments in the northern part of the lake had high ecological risk, while the risks in the southwestern and eastern regions were moderate. The non-carcinogenic risks to residents living around Taihu Lake were acceptable, but there were potential health risks from consuming drinking water and fish contaminated with chromium (VI), arsenic, and nickel.

Arsenic geochemistry of the sediments of the shallow aquifer and its correlation with the groundwater, Rangpur, Bangladesh

Sudip Saha et al.

Summary: The geochemical analysis of the shallow aquifer sediments in the Rangpur division revealed acidic nature, low salinity effects, and average heavy metal concentrations trending from Fe to Zn. Arsenic concentrations were also relatively low in the sediments. Groundwater arsenic levels were below the WHO permissible limit, correlating with sediment concentrations, suggesting a geogenic source. The release of arsenic to groundwater may be influenced by the sediments' acidic nature and minor organic carbon content.

Arsenic fractionation and mobility in sulfidic wetland soils during experimental drying

Petr Drahota et al.

Summary: This study examined the mobility of As, Fe, S, and trace metals in wetland soils through selective chemical extractions, S isotopes, and X-ray diffraction during saturation and drying processes. The results showed that re-flooding triggered the reductive dissolution of As-bearing Fe (oxyhydr)oxides, while exposure and drying led to the oxidation of sulfides. The study suggests sulfidic wetland soils can be long-term sources of As during major drought events.

Concomitant behavior of arsenic and selenium from the karst infillings materials of the fractured carbonate Dogger Aquifer (Hydrogeological Experimental Site, Poitiers, France)

R. Mhanna et al.

Summary: Petrographic and mineralogical analyses were conducted on black clayey sediments in the Hydrogeological Experimental Site (HES) of Poitiers (France) to investigate the behavior of arsenic and selenium in a fractured limestone aquifer. The sequential extractions revealed the association of arsenic with pyrite and secondary iron oxyhydroxides, while selenium was mainly associated with pyrite and organic matter. Leaching experiments as a function of pH showed the mobilization of both arsenic and selenium overlapped below pH 2 and above pH 8, with differences observed between pH 2 and 8.
