The association between urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cardiovascular diseases and blood pressure: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Atieh Mirzababaei et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the association between urinary metabolites of PAHs and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and blood pressure in adults, finding a significant positive association between all types of urinary metabolites of PAHs and blood pressure. However, there was no significant association between any urinary metabolite of PAH and coronary heart disease (CHD). Overall, the study suggests that different metabolites of PAHs are associated with an increased risk of CVD and HTN, indicating a need for further research to confirm these findings, including randomized clinical trials.

Summary: Asthma is a common chronic disease globally, and environmental chemicals may increase the risk of asthma and specific sensitization asthma along with other respiratory symptoms. Studies have found associations between PAHs and some pesticides with asthma, but research on many environmental chemicals has produced conflicting results.

Determination of OCPs, OPPs, and 21 SVOCs in water and sediment samples in five rivers of Shenzhen, China, during the period of 2017 and 2018

Wenhui Qiu et al.

Summary: The study identified 102 semivolatile organic compounds in the main rivers of Shenzhen, including organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides, with diazinon being the most frequent compound detected. The concentrations of SVOCs in water and sediment were relatively stable over the years, with organochlorine pesticides primarily coming from the degradation of DDT and organophosphorus pesticides being mainly from cumulative content.

Organophosphate pesticides and new-onset diabetes mellitus: From molecular mechanisms to a possible therapeutic perspective

Summary: Organophosphate is a commonly used pesticide in the agricultural sector, which can lead to hyperglycemia and new-onset diabetes mellitus. Currently, there is no preventive strategy for organophosphate-mediated new-onset diabetes mellitus, but reducing reactive oxygen species levels may help to reduce the risk of developing hyperglycemia.
