Size-Resolved Redox Activity and Cytotoxicity of Water-Soluble Urban Atmospheric Particulate Matter: Assessing Contributions from Chemical Components

Summary: This study characterized the chemical and toxicological properties of water-soluble particulate matter in the urban area of Thessaloniki, Greece, during different seasons. The analysis included water-soluble organic carbon, humic-like substances, and trace elements. Results showed that humic-like substances were a significant component of water-soluble organic carbon, and their concentrations varied among seasons and particle sizes. The most abundant water-soluble metals were Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn. The oxidative potential and cytotoxicity of particulate matter were positively correlated with water-soluble organic carbon and humic-like substances.

Design, optimization, and evaluation of a wet electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for aerosol collection

Summary: In this study, a wet electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was developed and optimized for the collection of ambient PM2.5 by applying an electrostatic charge to the particles. The wet ESP operated at a flow rate of 125 lpm and an applied positive voltage of 11 kV showed a particle collection efficiency exceeding 80-90% in all size ranges. Field tests compared the wet ESP with other conventional sampling methods, and the results showed good agreement in concentrations of metal and trace elements, as well as total organic carbon (TOC) content.

The oxidative potential of particulate matter (PM) in different regions around the world and its relation to air pollution sources

Summary: This study examines the impact of urban emission sources on the chemical composition and oxidative potential of ambient particulate matter (PM). The results show that PM samples from different emission sources have distinctive characteristics, with PM from biomass burning and secondary organic aerosols having the highest oxidative potential. In contrast, areas with high metal emissions, such as dust storms, refineries, and industrial areas, exhibit low oxidative potential.

Commuter exposure to particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Thessaloniki, Greece

Summary: This study investigates the exposure of commuters to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under different commuting modes in Thessaloniki, Greece. It was found that cyclists had the highest exposure during the warm season and the lowest exposure during the cold season, while exposure levels for bus passengers and car passengers were similar in both seasons. The study also assessed the carcinogenic and mutagenic potencies of the exposure PAH concentrations and estimated the inhalation cancer risk associated with PAHs, providing relevant information for transportation decision-making and increasing environmental awareness for urban commuting.

Emission characteristics and source identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from used mineral oil combustion

Summary: The emission characteristics of 16 PAHs from atomization combustion of five types of used mineral oil and two types of base oil were investigated. Results showed that higher temperatures and excess air ratios can efficiently reduce PAH emissions, with 2- and 3-ring PAHs dominating the total emissions. The study also found that the influence of temperature on PAH emissions can be weakened at high excess air levels.

The results showed that concentrations of certain components from tailpipe emissions and road dust decreased during the lockdown period compared to 2019, while concentrations of ambient PM2.5 and black carbon remained relatively stable.

Long-term trends in the contribution of PM2.5 sources to organic carbon (OC) in the Los Angeles basin and the effect of PM emission regulations

Summary: This study investigated the long-term variations in the contributions of emission sources to ambient PM2.5 organic carbon in central Los Angeles and Riverside from 2005 to 2015. Vehicular exhaust emissions, non-tailpipe emissions, and secondary organic aerosols were identified as dominant sources of OC, with a significant reduction in the contributions of tailpipe emissions observed over time. Effective air quality regulations targeting tailpipe emissions were found to reduce direct emissions and primary organic precursors of secondary aerosols, while an increasing trend in relative contributions of non-tailpipe emissions to OC highlights the need for policies addressing non-tailpipe PM emissions.
