Machine learning and circular bioeconomy: Building new resource efficiency from diverse waste streams

To-Hung Tsui et al.

Summary: Biorefinery systems are crucial for resource efficiency in circular bioeconomy, while artificial intelligence has great potential in complex scientific tasks. This review examines the use of machine learning (ML) in four biorefinery systems and compares it with traditional modeling techniques. The article covers algorithm selection, modeling challenges, and future improvements. The sharing of modeling knowledge will support sustainable development goals through digital transformation.

Performance Comparison of Five Methods for Tetrahymena Number Counting on the ImageJ Platform: Assessing the Built-in Tool and Machine-Learning-Based Extension

Kevin Adi Kurnia et al.

Summary: Previous methods for measuring protozoan numbers have limitations, but this study establishes an ImageJ-based workflow for high-throughput quantification of ciliate numbers. Among five different methods tested, the deep-learning-based StarDist method displayed the best performance for Tetrahymena cell counting.

Lanthanides Toxicity in Zebrafish Embryos Are Correlated to Their Atomic Number

Ying-Ting Lin et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively explores the key factors of lanthanide complex electronic structures for the acute toxicity of rare earth elements (REEs) using zebrafish as a model animal. The research reveals a significant correlation between the toxicity of REEs and their atomic numbers, Milliken charge, and aromatic C-avg charge. Additionally, the disruption of photo motor response activity in zebrafish embryos is observed to evaluate lanthanide toxicity.

Indirect assessment of internal irradiation from tritium decay on Lemna Minor duckweed

O. S. Ifayefunmi et al.

Summary: The study modeled the response changes of Lemna minor duckweed's specific growth rate based on tritium activity concentration and gamma radiation dose. Experimental data extrapolated using OECD guidelines showed that an increase in tritium activity and radiation dosage led to a decrease in the specific growth rate of Lemna minor duckweed. The study also found a linear relationship between absorbed dose and activity concentration for the average dependency growth rate of Lemna minor.

Glyphosate, aminomethylphosphonic acid, and glufosinate ammonium in agricultural groundwater and surface water in China from 2017 to 2018: Occurrence, main drivers, and environmental risk assessment

Yue Geng et al.

Summary: Glyphosate, AMPA, and glufosinate ammonium were detected in groundwater and surface water in agricultural basins of China, with different exposure pathways and risks identified. The results suggest low risk to water consumption in groundwater, but potential unacceptable risk to fish embryos in surface water, highlighting the environmental risk of these herbicides to aquatic organism safety in China agriculture.
