Associations of plasma metal levels with type 2 diabetes and the mediating effects of microRNAs

Hongli Nie et al.

Summary: This study found significant associations between several plasma metal levels and diabetes risk, as well as certain plasma miRNAs being related to diabetes risk. MiR-122-5p mediated the relationship between titanium and diabetes risk by 48.0%.

Effect of exposures to mixtures of lead and various metals on hypertension, pre-hypertension, and blood pressure: A cross-sectional study from the China National Human Biomonitoring

Yingli Qu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of mixtures of lead and various metals on blood pressure and the likelihood of pre-hypertension and hypertension in Chinese adults. The findings revealed that higher blood lead levels were associated with increased odds of pre-hypertension and hypertension. Additionally, blood arsenic levels were found to be associated with increased odds of pre-hypertension, while urinary molybdenum levels were associated with lower odds of hypertension. The analysis also showed that metal mixture levels in blood, with lead being the largest contributor, were significantly associated with higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Mechanisms of manganese-induced neurotoxicity and the pursuit of neurotherapeutic strategies

Edward Pajarillo et al.

Summary: Chronic exposure to elevated levels of manganese can cause a neurological disorder similar to Parkinson's disease. Recent studies have identified potential molecular targets of manganese toxicity, which could contribute to the development of more effective gene therapies. This review provides an update on the mechanisms of manganese-induced neurotoxicity, as well as potential therapeutic approaches to treat manganese toxicity.

Esophagus cancer and essential trace elements

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: This article reviews the association between essential trace elements intake or supplementation (especially zinc, copper, iron, and selenium) and the risk of esophageal cancer. Zinc intake may decrease the risk of esophageal cancer, while copper supplementation remains uncertain in its association with EC risk. Total iron consumption is associated with lower risk, while heme iron intake may increase risk. Selenium intake shows a protective effect against EC, especially for individuals with low baseline selenium levels.

Associations of multiple plasma metals with chronic kidney disease in patients with diabetes

Ruixin Wang et al.

Summary: In patients with diabetes, exposure to multiple metals is associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Specifically, plasma levels of zinc, arsenic, and rubidium are positively correlated with CKD risk, while titanium, cadmium, and lead are inversely correlated. The co-exposure to multiple metals is linked to an increased CKD risk in diabetic individuals.

Racial and Sex Disparities in Gout Prevalence Among US Adults

Natalie McCormick et al.

Summary: Emerging data suggest that there is a higher prevalence of gout among Black adults, especially Black women, in the US compared to White adults. However, there is a lack of national-level, sex-specific data on racial differences in gout prevalence and potential risk factors. This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to the disparities in gout prevalence between Black and White adults in the US general population. The findings indicate that gout was more prevalent among adults self-reporting as Black during a 10-year period, and these differences may be influenced by sex-specific differences in diet, social determinants of health, and clinical factors. Culturally informed efforts targeting these factors could help reduce the current disparities related to gout.

The associations between urinary metals and metal mixtures and kidney function in Chinese community-dwelling older adults with diabetes mellitus

Ting-ting Zhou et al.

Summary: In older adults with diabetes mellitus in Chinese communities, urinary levels of arsenic and vanadium were found to be positively associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), both separately and in a mixture. The mixture of metals showed a linear dose-response association with the odds of CKD.

Plasma metals and cancer incidence in patients with type 2 diabetes

Zhaoyang Li et al.

Summary: Limited evidence suggests a link between plasma levels of multiple metals and incident cancer risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Copper and lead were significantly associated with increased cancer risk, while zinc and chromium were associated with decreased cancer risk. Monitoring metal levels in diabetic patients is crucial for cancer prevention.
