The interface between international trade and investment agreements and food environment policymaking: A conceptual framework

Kelly Garton et al.

Summary: Addressing the global challenge of malnutrition requires policy measures to improve food environments, but international trade and investment agreements may limit governments' policy space in regulating food environments. This paper presents a new conceptual framework for assessing the potential impacts of these agreements on policy space for regulating food environments and provides a basis for analyzing the political economy of regulation in relation to unhealthy food and beverages.

International Trade and Investment Agreements as Barriers to Food Environment Regulation for Public Health Nutrition: A Realist Review

Kelly Garton et al.

Summary: International trade and investment agreements may restrict policy intervention space, affecting the formulation and implementation of nutrition policies. The study found that these restrictions are mainly achieved through TIA rules and principles, as well as interaction with policy design. Strategic choices in policy design can avoid most substantive constraints.

Action-oriented prospective policy analysis to inform the adoption of a fiscal policy to reduce diet-related disease in the Solomon Islands

Erica Reeve et al.

Summary: Fiscal tools are recommended for prevention of diet-related diseases, with a focus on a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in the Solomon Islands. The study found high consumption of SSBs, especially by children, and highlighted the potential health and economic benefits of implementing a SSB tax. Policymakers face challenges in demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions in the local context, but developing policy solutions based on local factors may enhance their persuasive power. Researchers are encouraged to engage with policy advocates to inform and shape real-world health policy improvements.
