The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index predicts sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis

Summary: Patients with cirrhosis are at high risk for sarcopenia and malnutrition, which negatively impact their quality of life and increase their risk of mortality. This study explores the relationship between the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and sarcopenia/gait speed in cirrhosis patients and evaluates the usefulness of GNRI in predicting sarcopenia. The study finds that lower GNRI values are associated with higher prevalence of sarcopenia and slower gait speed. The GNRI is a helpful screening tool for predicting sarcopenia in cirrhosis patients.

Associations of Overall Survival with Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index in Patients with Advanced Pancreatic Cancer

Summary: Nutritional assessment is crucial in cancer care for improving survival and quality of life. This study found that the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) can be used as a practical tool to assess nutritional status and predict survival in advanced-stage pancreatic cancer patients. Higher weight and albumin levels at the first admission were associated with longer survival. Patients with any nutritional risk had significantly shorter survival compared to those with no nutritional risk. Monitoring nutritional status is vital for promoting increased survival from diagnosis.

Summary: This study assessed the clinical feasibility of the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) as determinants of survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The results showed that GNRI was a predictor of survival, while PNI was not. Prognostic models for overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and relapse-free survival were established.

These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
