REGROUP: A Robot-Centric Group Detection and Tracking System

Angelique Taylor et al.

Summary: To facilitate the transition of human-robot interaction from dyadic to group interaction, new methods are introduced to help robots sense and understand team behavior. The Robot-Centric Group Detection and Tracking System (REGROUP) is proposed, which enables robots to detect and track groups of people from an ego-centric perspective using crowd-aware techniques. The system demonstrates robustness to various vision challenges and outperforms existing methods in terms of precision and recall for group detection and tracking accuracy. The release of REGROUP is expected to support further research and development in HRI.

Risk-Perception-Aware Control Design Under Dynamic Spatial Risks

Aamodh Suresh et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel Risk-Perception-Aware (RPA) control design that uses non-rational perception of risks to handle uncertain dynamic spatial costs. The author uses Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) to model a Decision Maker's risk perception and constructs perceived risk functions that transform the uncertain dynamic spatial costs to deterministic perceived risks. These risks are used to build safety sets which represent risk-averse to risk-insensitive perception. The study also introduces inclusive and versatile notions to compare and evaluate risk models and proves that CPT is the most inclusive and versatile model. The proposed RPA controller has a larger feasible control set and more accurate stabilization compared to CVaR and ER models.

Planning Under Non-Rational Perception of Uncertain Spatial Costs

Aamodh Suresh et al.

Summary: This research explores risk-perception-aware motion-planning strategies using Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) to generate perceived risk maps and path-length metrics. The study demonstrates the modeling power of CPT in theory and simulation, as well as its superiority in expressiveness compared to other risk perception models like Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR). The results show that a planner equipped with CPT along with simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) can better approximate arbitrary paths in an environment.

Exploiting Natural Language for Efficient Risk-Aware Multi-Robot SaR Planning

Vikram Shree et al.

Summary: In this work, a method is proposed to estimate scene danger for planning multi-robot search and rescue missions by leveraging natural language descriptions and image data. A risk-aware variant of the Multi-robot Efficient Search Path Planning problem is formulated to ensure both searchers' and victim safety, and is solved via a distributed approach based on Mixed-Integer Linear Programming. The framework allows to plan safer yet highly successful search missions.

Risk-Aware Decision Making for Service Robots to Minimize Risk of Patient Falls in Hospitals

Roya Sabbagh Novin et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel risk-aware planning framework is proposed to minimize the risk of falls by providing a patient with an assistive device. The approach combines learning-based prediction with model-based control, allowing the robot to plan for fall prevention tasks. Simulation results show that using the proposed cost function, the robot can plan interventions to avoid high fall score events effectively.

Social Navigation for Mobile Robots in the Emergency Department

Angelique M. Taylor et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new Safety-Critical Deep Q-Network (SafeDQN) system for mobile robot navigation in an emergency department environment. SafeDQN is based on the insight that high-acuity patients tend to have more healthcare workers attending to them who move more quickly. Compared to classic navigation methods, SafeDQN is able to generate the safest, quickest path for mobile robots.
