A Soft-Rigid Hybrid Gripper With Lateral Compliance and Dexterous In-Hand Manipulation

Wenpei Zhu et al.

Summary: Soft grippers with hybrid design, combining soft actuators and rigid constraints, have gained attention for their improved safety, dexterity, and adaptability. This work presents a new hybrid gripper design inspired by the human metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, featuring eight independent muscles. Experimental results demonstrate the novel features enabled by adding MCP complexity, such as in-hand manipulation and lateral passive compliance. The prototype gripper, utilizing lightweight pneumatic bellows soft actuators, achieves excellent grasping adaptability and can grasp objects over 20 times its weight.

Performance enhancement of the soft robotic segment for a trunk-like arm

Shaowu Tang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of key design parameters on the performance of trunk-like soft arms. It is found that adjusting the hardness of soft materials, the height of module segments, and the arrayed radius of actuators can lead to improvements in workspace, lateral stiffness, payload, and bending moment. The study provides comprehensive guidelines for designing trunk-like soft arms and enables high performance in robotic manipulation.

Development of modular multi-degree-of-freedom hybrid joints and robotic flexible legs via fluidic elastomer actuators

Xuguang Dong et al.

Summary: Soft actuators are incorporated into rigid parallel mechanisms to develop multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) soft-rigid hybrid joints. The proposed joints successfully achieve desired DOFs with high torque to weight ratio. Applications on legged robots demonstrate that multi-DOF legs based on soft actuators can perform both fundamental biomimetic movements and high-speed tasks.

Vertebraic Soft Robotic Joint Design With Twisting and Antagonism

Jianhui Liu et al.

Summary: The soft robotic manipulator attracts researchers' interest due to its conformity to the unstructured environment and safe interaction with humans and fragile objects. However, the lack of bending and twisting capabilities in current designs hinders its use in scenarios requiring local position adjustment. In this study, we proposed a soft robotic joint with a vertebra in the center of tilt-arranged soft origami actuators, allowing for twisting motion in addition to rotation X and Y. The joint prototype exhibited improved payload and stiffness variability due to the antagonism pair formed by the tilted actuator configuration and the vertebra.

Hybrid Robotic Manipulator Using Sensorized Articulated Segment Joints With Soft Inflatable Rubber Bellows

Babar Jamil et al.

Summary: This article presents the design of a sensorized hybrid hard-soft articulated joint, which combines rigid motion with soft actuation. The joint is capable of following a given trajectory and rejecting disturbances while being controlled in a closed-loop manner. The design is extended to a two degrees of freedom joint and integrated with a rigid base joint to form a 6-DOFs hybrid robotic manipulator for use in small retail businesses.

A generalizable equilibrium model for bending soft arms with longitudinal actuators

Gina Olson et al.

Summary: The research presents a quasi-static analytical model for soft arms bending with longitudinal actuators, which connects arm structure and actuator behavior to unloaded arm performance. Experimentally validated, the model can be applied to planar (2D) and spatial (3D) bends, providing theoretical support for the design of soft robot arms.

A soft manipulator for efficient delicate grasping in shallow water: Modeling, control, and real-world experiments

Zheyuan Gong et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel soft robotic system for collecting items in shallow water. The soft manipulator with an opposite-bending-and-stretching structure design allows for precise control of the end effector through a simple and efficient kinematics method. Experimental results demonstrate that this soft manipulator is capable of tracking complex trajectories and exhibits low inertia features during underwater operations.

Underwater Crawling Robot With Hydraulic Soft Actuators

Qinlin Tan et al.

Summary: Soft robots are increasingly being used in underwater robotic design due to their sealed body structure and compliance, but their inherent limitations in structural rigidity, actuation precision, and force exertion have hindered their applications. By strategically incorporating rigid components into soft actuators, proposing a rigid-soft hybrid leg design, and developing a novel valve-free hydraulic actuation system, the loading capability and actuation precision of underwater crawling robots can be significantly enhanced.
