Investigation on morphology and chemistry of the Beilby layer on polished fused silica

Zehua Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that the polished fused silica surface contains a Beilby layer, which has elevated levels of polishing contaminants and masks the subsurface damage. These subsurface damage and polishing contaminants are the crucial factors leading to the decrease of laser induced damage threshold of fused silica.

Plasma-induced atom migration manufacturing of fused silica

Rulin Li et al.

Summary: This study introduces a nonsubtractive surface polishing technique called plasma-induced atom migration manufacturing (PAMM), which utilizes energy transmitted by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) to form a molten layer on the fused silica surface, achieving a rearrangement of surface atoms or clusters driven by surface tension. Unlike the conventional subtractive smoothing processes, PAMM removes no material and offers high efficiency and low cost, making it a promising technique for producing large optical components with excellent optical performance and long operation life.

Summary: Optical manufacturing is crucial in various fields, and the PAMM process offers a nonsubtractive approach to achieve atomic-level surface roughness control. By utilizing inductively coupled plasma as the tool, PAMM demonstrates its feasibility as an alternative method for atomic-level surface manufacturing.

Summary: This paper introduces a non-conventional polishing technique for fused silica glass, achieving angstrom level surface finishing using the Ball End Magneto rheological finishing method (BEMRF). This method minimizes subsurface damage and improves the surface roughness and material removal of fused silica glass, allowing for highly polished and precise optics fabrication.

Investigation on laser beam figuring of fused silica using microsecond pulsed CO2 laser radiation

Andre Temmler et al.

Summary: A high-precision laser ablation process using CO2 laser radiation and microsecond laser pulses achieved material ablation on an atomic/molecular scale. Empirical investigation of key process parameters such as pulse energy, duration, and fluence led to ablation depths smaller than 5 nm per layer and spatial resolution less than 50 μm. High stability in pulse energy was identified as crucial for achieving high precision in ablation depth.
