Shear behaviour of a rock bridge sandwiched between incipient joints under the influence of hydraulic pressures

Shicheng Wang et al.

Summary: Through direct shear tests, it was revealed that rock bridges can fail through tensile, shear, and mixed failure mechanisms. Hydraulic pressure facilitates the tensile failure mechanism and induces rougher fracture surfaces, while normal stress facilitates the shear failure mechanism and induces less rough fracture. Hydraulic pressure reduces the global shear strength of the rock block by reducing the effective normal stress applied to the rock bridge area, which is highly dependent on the joint persistence, k. Additionally, the rock bridge failure stage in the shear stress-shear displacement curves fluctuates due to the iterative occurrence of hydraulic pressure lag with fracture propagation.

Deep-Sea Mining Stirs Up Muddy Questions: A controversial pilot program will collect metal-rich nodules from the ocean floor

David Schneider

Summary: BMW and Volvo have joined the call for a moratorium on deep-sea mining, which has been spearheaded by the World Wildlife Fund. Their involvement is significant as electric vehicle batteries contain cobalt, a metal that some hope to extract from the seabed, despite concerns from environmentalists.

Centrifuge experiment on the penetration test for evaluating undrained strength of deep-sea surface soils

Xingsen Guo et al.

Summary: This study developed penetrometers with multiple probes for centrifuge experiments on South China Sea soil and kaolin clay. The forces on the probes throughout the penetration process were analyzed and quantified, and the spatial influence zone and penetration depth were determined. A methodology to determine the penetration resistance factors for surface marine soils was established.

Summary: This paper presents a model that uses only two sets of small-size rock specimens to determine fracture and strength parameters without size effect and predict the actual structural performance of rocks. The model has been validated and shown to accurately predict the behavior of large-size specimens.

Wear mechanism investigation in a centrifugal slurry pump impeller by numerical simulation and experiments

Guangjie Peng et al.

Summary: Centrifugal slurry pumps are widely used in industries such as ore mining and petrochemicals to transport fluids containing solid particles. However, the impellers in these pumps experience severe wear. Increasing flow rate leads to movement of high solid volume fraction areas, while increasing concentration reduces pump lift and efficiency.

Progressive Damage Behaviours of Triaxially Confined Rocks under Multiple Dynamic Loads

K. Liu et al.

Summary: Investigating rock progressive damage under static confinement and strain rates using dynamic triaxial compression tests reveals the generation mechanism of natural fault damage zones. The study found that dynamic mechanical properties decrease with increasing impact times, and microcracks primarily propagate along the maximum principal stress, influenced by true triaxial confinement and dynamic impacts. Additionally, different types of rocks exhibit distinct failure modes, with absorbed energy increasing nonlinearly with crack surface and volume.
