Blood pressure, arterial stiffness, and cardiovascular risk profiles in 8-12-year-old children following preeclampsia (FINNCARE-study)

Michelle A. -K. Renlund et al.

Summary: This study found that children with preeclampsia develop alterations in blood pressure and arterial stiffness early in life, which are associated with gestational, perinatal, and child cardiovascular risk factors. The changes in blood pressure are related to maternal gestational blood pressure and prematurity, while arterial stiffness is determined by child characteristics.

Arterial health during early childhood following abnormal fetal growth

Rasmus F. W. Olander et al.

Summary: In this study, arterial dimensions in childhood were found to be associated with current anthropometrics, especially lean body mass, and sex, explaining differences in arterial layer thickness. No signs of fetal programming of cardiovascular risk or arterial health in early childhood were observed.

Childhood Blood Pressure, Carotid Intima Media Thickness, and Distensibility After In Utero Exposure to Gestational Hypertensive Disorders

Clarissa J. Wiertsema et al.

Summary: Gestational hypertension and higher gestational blood pressure are associated with higher offspring blood pressure and lower carotid distensibility. However, preeclampsia is not associated with offspring vascular outcomes. These associations are more likely driven by genetic predisposition and shared lifestyle rather than by a direct intrauterine effect.

Body fat, pericardial fat, liver fat and arterial health at age 10 years

Giulietta S. Monasso et al.

Summary: At school age, lean and fat mass seem to be differentially related to carotid intima-media thickness but not distensibility. Arterial development might be affected by lean mass, general and specific fat mass.

The 2021 International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy classification, diagnosis & management recommendations for international practice*

Laura A. Magee et al.

Summary: Uniform departmental management protocols should be maintained for managing hypertensive pregnant women, and regular audits of maternal and fetal outcomes should be conducted. The cause and optimal clinical management of pre-eclampsia and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy remain uncertain, therefore, it is recommended that every hypertensive pregnant woman be given the opportunity to participate in research, clinical trials, and follow-up studies.

Protocol: A randomized controlled trial to assess effectiveness of a 12-month lifestyle intervention to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in families ten years after pre-eclampsia (FINNCARE)

Tiina Jaaskelainen et al.

Summary: This study aims to compare cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and progression in pre-eclampsia (PE) families versus non-PE families, and evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a web-based lifestyle intervention in reducing blood pressure and overall CVD risk.

Determinants of Intima-Media Thickness in the Young The ALSPAC Study

Scott T. Chiesa et al.

Summary: The study found that among young people, fat-free mass and systolic blood pressure are the only modifiable risk factors positively associated with cIMT, while fat mass is negatively associated with cIMT. Cumulative exposure to these factors during adolescence can affect changes in cIMT, and risk factor-associated differences in the radial artery mainly occur in the media layer.

Summary: This study found that children exposed to preeclampsia in utero, especially those with early-onset disease, have higher rates of hypertension and pulse-wave velocity, indicating a potential impact on vascular function.

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Subsequent Risk of Premature Mortality

Yi-Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that experiencing hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) such as gestational hypertension or pre-eclampsia is associated with an increased risk of premature mortality, particularly cardiovascular mortality, regardless of developing chronic hypertension later on.

Maternal hypertensive disorder of pregnancy and offspring early-onset cardiovascular disease in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood: A national population-based cohort study

Summary: The study suggests that exposure to maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy may increase the risk of early-onset cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. Offspring born to mothers with a history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes are at higher risk. The strongest association is observed in cases of early-onset and severe preeclampsia.
