Waiting times of women vs. men undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation

Julia Stehli et al.

Summary: This study found that TAVI waiting times are significantly longer in women compared to men and are associated with increased 30-day mortality and heart failure hospitalizations, as well as reduced mobility.

Sex Differences in Outcomes After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement A POPular TAVI Subanalysis

Kees H. van Bergeijk et al.

Summary: This study compared the occurrence of bleeding and ischemic complications after TAVR between women and men under different antiplatelet and oral anticoagulant regimens. The results showed that women had a higher incidence of major or life-threatening bleeding, particularly when taking aspirin.

Gender Differences in Age-Stratified Early Outcomes in Patients With Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

Chi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study examined the gender and age differences in patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The results showed that female patients had similar in-hospital death rates as male patients, and at the 30-day and 6-month follow-up visits, there was no difference in all-cause readmission and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) between men and women in most age groups, except for women aged 18 to 59 who were less likely to undergo pacemaker implantation and transfusion. However, women in the 70 to 79 and 80 to 90 age groups had a higher risk of all-cause readmission at the 6-month follow-up.

Outcomes of Aortic Valve Replacement for Chronic Aortic Insufficiency: Analysis of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Database

Summary: This study evaluated the outcomes and risk factors for surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for aortic insufficiency (AI) in a national cohort. The results showed that operative mortality and morbidity for isolated SAVR for AI is very low in a national cohort, providing a benchmark for future transcatheter approaches.

Sex differences in left ventricular remodelling in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis

Jurrien H. Kuneman et al.

Summary: Sex differences in left ventricular remodeling and outcome after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) were examined in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). Women demonstrated better outcome after TAVI compared with men, and men were more likely to have concentric remodeling. The interaction between left ventricular remodeling patterns and sex was not associated with survival.

Sex Differences in the Impact of Aortic Valve Calcium Score on Mortality After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Parth P. Patel et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of sex differences in aortic valve calcium score (AVCS) on long-term mortality following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The results demonstrate a notable sex difference in the association between AVCS and long-term mortality, particularly among women. This study highlights the potential value of AVCS in preprocedural risk stratification, specifically among women undergoing TAVR.

Sex differences in mortality and 90-day readmission rates after transcatheter aortic valve replacement: a nationwide analysis from the USA

Venkata S. Pajjuru et al.

Summary: The study aims to assess gender differences in in-hospital mortality and 90-day readmission rates among patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in the USA. The results showed that both in-hospital mortality and 90-day readmission rates have decreased over time for both genders. However, women still have slightly higher in-hospital mortality and 90-day readmission rates compared to men.

Sex Disparities in Myocardial Infarction: Biology or Bias?

Julia Stehli et al.

Summary: After myocardial infarction (MI), women tend to have worse outcomes compared to men due to various factors such as underestimation of risk in women, delays in diagnosis and treatment, and lower utilization of guideline-directed therapies. These disparities lead to higher mortality, major cardiovascular events, and bleeding in women post-MI. The question of whether these differences are due to biological factors or bias, or a combination of both, remains to be answered through a review of sex disparities in all aspects of acute MI care.

Sex Differences in Radial Access for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Acute Coronary Syndrome Are Independent of Body Size

Julia Stehli et al.

Summary: Radial access for PCI in ACS patients is associated with lower bleeding and mortality rates, but it is less frequently used in women. Female sex independently predicts lower radial access use and higher rates of major bleeding and mortality, highlighting disparities in access and outcomes based on gender.

Excess Mortality and Undertreatment of Women With Severe Aortic Stenosis

Christophe Tribouilloy et al.

Summary: Women with severe AS are diagnosed at later ages and have more symptoms than men. Despite prevalent symptoms, AVR is less often performed in women and 5-year excess mortality is noted in women versus men, even after age matching.

Prevalence of Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Associated Aortopathy in Newborns in Copenhagen, Denmark

Anne-Sophie Sillesen et al.

Summary: The prevalence of bicuspid aortic valve among newborns in Copenhagen was 0.77%, with aortopathy present in 33% of cases. This suggests that BAV is likely a fetal malformation as indicated by the high rate of aortic disease among affected newborns.

Sex disparities in patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis

Angela Lowenstern et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the equitable distribution of treatment and outcomes for aortic valve replacement (AVR) among symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (ssAS) patients across sexes. It found that females were less likely to undergo AVR compared to males, but were more likely to choose transcatheter (TAVR) method when treated. There were disparities in female treatment rates for ssAS patients.

Impact of sex on the management and outcome of aortic stenosis patients

David Bienjonetti-Boudreau et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of sex on the management and outcome of patients with aortic stenosis (AS). Despite similar baseline hemodynamic AS severity, women were less likely to be referred for aortic valve replacement (AVR) and had higher mortality rates, especially in cases of discordant markers of AS severity.
