Covalently Grafted Peptides to Decellularized Pericardium: Modulation of Surface Density

Leonardo Cassari et al.

Summary: The covalent functionalization of synthetic peptides allows modification of various biomaterials to guide cell behavior. This study demonstrates the covalent anchorage of a synthetic peptide (REDV) to a decellularized pericardial matrix through Schiff base formation. Increasing the concentration of the peptide solution enhances the surface density of the anchored peptide. The characterization of the matrices includes different analyses and bioassays to evaluate their properties.

Aortic Leaflet Stresses Are Substantially Lower Using Pulmonary Visceral Pleura Than Pericardial Tissue

Ye Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of aortic valves with different bending rigidity using a computational fluid-structure interaction (FSI) framework. The results suggest that aortic valves made from pulmonary visceral pleura (PVP) with smaller Young's modulus have better performance.

A New Detergent for the Effective Decellularization of Bovine and Porcine Pericardia

Martina Todesco et al.

Summary: Human and animal pericardium are commonly used materials for repairing damaged tissues in cardiovascular surgery, but they have drawbacks such as calcification and limited availability. Decellularized pericardium, which removes cellular and nuclear components, shows potential as a scaffold for cardiovascular tissue regeneration. This study evaluates the effects of a new detergent on decellularizing bovine and porcine pericardium, and finds that the decellularized pericardium retains its extracellular matrix structure without cytotoxic effects.

Novel Biomaterial for Artery Patch in Swine Model With High-Fat Diet

Xiao Lu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of swine and bovine pulmonary visceral pleura in artery patch-angioplasty in a swine model of high-fat diet, showing that the procedure resulted in patent arteries with development of neo-endothelium and media similar to native arteries, as well as adaptation for lipid transport and metabolism in a hypercholesterolemic environment.
