Preservable superhydrophilicity of thermally cured graphene-nanoplatelets/epoxy nanocomposite coatings

Geng Di Sia et al.

Summary: This study aims to preserve the superhydrophilicity and ultrafast water permeation property of thermally cured graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) coating after adding epoxy to enhance adhesion. The addition of epoxy promotes the formation of carbon-carbon chains during thermal curing, making the GNPs/epoxy nanocomposite hydrophobic. However, the use of silver-filled epoxy can prevent the crosslinking of carbon-carbon chains and preserve the superhydrophilicity of GNPs. Comprehensive characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to understand the interaction between carbon-filled epoxy, silver-filled epoxy, and graphene nanostructure during the curing process. This study provides important insights into the preservation of superhydrophilicity in GNPs/epoxy nanocomposites.

Investigation of the influence of the location of oxygenated functional groups in graphene nanostructures on water permeation via molecular dynamics simulations

Tze Cheng Kueh et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulations and experiments to investigate the water permeability of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The results showed that GNPs had better water permeability than GO, despite having larger interlayer spacing and higher oxidation levels. This can be attributed to the shorter translation paths and wandering time of water molecules in GNPs, which encounter lower energy barriers. Additionally, both GO and GNPs with a certain amount of hydroxyl groups retard water transport, but through different mechanisms.

Pool boiling heat transfer and bubble dynamics of modified copper micro-structured surfaces

Pulak Sen et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrophobic copper micro-structured surfaces were prepared through chemical etching and heat treatment, resulting in different micro-structural features. The experimental results showed that the prepared hydrophobic surfaces have a higher heat transfer coefficient, although the critical heat flux is slightly smaller compared to the bare copper surface. Additionally, the micro-porous surface prepared by a combination of two conventional processes significantly improves heat transfer.

Observation of D band splitting in vertically aligned graphene nanowalls and their evolution with laser power during Raman spectroscopy

Rajib Kar et al.

Summary: Splitting of D band was observed in vertically aligned graphene nanowalls for the first time during Raman spectroscopy analysis, with two distinct peaks D-1 and D-2. The intensity and full width at half maxima of D-2 decreased with increasing laser power, indicating a reduction in defects. Interestingly, the G band did not split with increasing laser power, showing the durability of the nanostructures.

Experimental study of nucleate pool boiling heat transfer improvement utilizing micro/nanoparticles porous coating on copper surfaces

Hesam Moghadasi et al.

Summary: Surface coating using spin-coating technique was experimentally studied to enhance heat transfer in nucleate pool boiling of distilled water at atmospheric pressure. Improved surface roughness, porosity, and nucleation sites densities were achieved with surface coating, leading to enhanced boiling performance. Superior surface characteristics of micro/nanostructured coatings resulted in an enhanced heat transfer coefficient value.
