Respiratory syncytial virus prevention within reach: the vaccine and monoclonal antibody landscape

Natalie Mazur et al.

Summary: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of infant mortality and morbidity in older adults. Efforts are being made to develop RSV vaccines and immunoprophylaxis using various approaches, with 33 candidates currently in clinical development. Understanding antibody targets has led to more rational and structure-based vaccine design. An extended half-life monoclonal antibody for infants is expected to receive regulatory approval within a year. Other approaches include live-attenuated vaccines for older infants, subunit vaccines for pregnant women, and vector and nucleic acid vaccines for older adults. Ensuring access and affordability of RSV vaccines globally is a priority.

Maternal vaccination: a review of current evidence and recommendations

Melanie Etti et al.

Summary: Maternal vaccination is an effective measure to protect pregnant women, fetuses, and infants from infections. However, concerns about vaccine safety from healthcare providers and pregnant women have led to low utilization of this disease prevention method, as seen in the low uptake of COVID-19 vaccine among pregnant women globally. This article provides an update on the current recommendations for vaccines during pregnancy, including evidence on novel vaccine platforms. It also presents an overview of the data supporting the use of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnancy and the development of vaccines for use in pregnant women.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness and perinatal outcomes of COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy

Smriti Prasad et al.

Summary: This study evaluated evidence from 23 studies and found that COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are safe and effective during pregnancy. Vaccination reduces the risk of infection and stillbirth. There is no evidence of adverse outcomes associated with vaccination.

Vaccines-safety in pregnancy

Mala Arora et al.

Summary: Vaccination during pregnancy is important for the health of both the mother and newborn, with safe vaccines including tetanus toxoid, Tdap, and Flu vaccines; high-risk women should receive specific vaccines such as hepatitis A and B; postpartum women should consider HPV vaccination and other necessary vaccines.

Impact of maternal diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccination on pertussis booster immune responses in toddlers: Follow-up of a randomized trial

Federico Martinon-Torres et al.

Summary: The study found that infants born to mothers vaccinated with pertussis vaccine still had lower pertussis antibody concentrations before receiving a booster vaccine, indicating interference by maternal antibodies. However, the immune response rates were high post-booster vaccination for all toddlers, with higher antibody concentrations in the control group for certain antigens. Further evaluation is needed on the clinical significance of this interference.
