Chicoric Acid Prevents Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration in a Mouse Parkinson's Disease Model: Immune Response and Transcriptome Profile of the Spleen and Colon

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: Chicoric acid (CA) extracted from chicory and echinacea has been found to possess neuroprotective effects in Parkinson's disease (PD) mice by preventing dopaminergic neuronal lesions and motor deficits. CA also regulates the immunological response of the spleen and colon. Transcriptome analysis revealed potential target genes and molecular biological mechanisms. These findings highlight the role of CA in manipulating the brain-spleen and brain-gut axes and its neuroprotective effects.

Metabolic Syndrome: Updates on Pathophysiology and Management in 2021

Gracia Fahed et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic dysregulations associated with insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation. If left untreated, it significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, many aspects of Metabolic syndrome are still not completely understood, and many questions remain unanswered. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the historical background, epidemiology, histopathology, pathophysiology, management, and prevention of Metabolic syndrome.

Chicoric Acid Attenuated Renal Tubular Injury in HFD-Induced Chronic Kidney Disease Mice through the Promotion of Mitophagy via the Nrf2/PINK/Parkin Pathway

Xiao-qin Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of chicoric acid (CA) on renal tubular injury in obesity-related CKD and its underlying mechanism. The results showed that CA improved metabolic disorders and alleviated histological changes and functional damage in the kidney. CA also reduced lipid accumulation and cell apoptosis, and improved mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress. Furthermore, CA improved mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy by regulating gene expression. These findings reveal the important role of CA in the prevention and alleviation of obesity-related CKD.

Chicory: Understanding the Effects and Effectors of This Functional Food

Celine L. Pouille et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms of fructose, chlorogenic acids, and sesquiterpene lactones in industrial chicory root. The findings suggest that these molecules have pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic effects, and play an important role in appetite regulation. Fructose appears to be the most involved in these activities.

Progress in the treatment of drug-induced liver injury with natural products

Yuan-kai Sun et al.

Summary: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a major cause of liver disease worldwide, and many drugs can cause this condition. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has shown effectiveness in treating DILI, but reducing the toxicity of TCM remains a challenge. Hydrogel-based nanocomposite materials may serve as excellent carriers for TCM. This review provides new insights for further exploration of TCM in the treatment of DILI.
