Slow-flow phenomenon after drug-coated balloon angioplasty for lower-extremity arteries is associated with lack of prescribing of calcium channel blockers

Yoh Arita et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between prescription drugs and the slow-flow phenomenon after drug-coated balloon angioplasty. Of the 30 patients, 17% presented with the slow-flow phenomenon. Patients with the slow-flow phenomenon were significantly less commonly prescribed calcium channel blockers than those without the phenomenon (P = 0.03). There were no differences in clinical outcomes between groups during the 10-month observation period.

Peptide Sodium Channels Modulator Mu-Agatoxin-Aa1a Prevents Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury of Cells

Elena Iurova et al.

Summary: In this article, the effects of the sodium channel modulator mu-agatoxin-Aa1a on cells damaged by ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) were studied. The experiments showed that mu-agatoxin-Aa1a effectively prevented IRI by reducing apoptosis and maintaining intracellular ion concentrations, pH, ROS, NO, and mitochondrial potential.

Therapeutic Peptides to Treat Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

Carlota Fernandez Rico et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases, especially acute myocardial infarction, are the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Although revascularization procedures have been effective in reducing infarct size, they can also cause ischemia-reperfusion injury. There is an urgent need for new cardioprotective strategies to address this issue, given the increasing prevalence rates of risk factors such as aging, diabetes, and obesity.

Cell death and ischemia-reperfusion injury in lung transplantation

Megan Capuzzimati et al.

Summary: This article discusses the relationship between cell death and inflammation caused by ischemia-reperfusion in lung transplantation. Different types of cell death and their related molecules are explored. The inhibition of cell death has been explored as a therapeutic approach for ischemia-reperfusion injury in lung transplantation. Understanding these mechanisms is important for donor management, organ preservation, and prevention and treatment of primary graft dysfunction during and after transplantation.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury: Mechanisms of injury and implications for management (Review)

Jianfeng He et al.

Summary: Myocardial infarction is a leading cause of death in patients with coronary heart disease worldwide. Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI) results in more serious damage to the ischemic myocardium when the blood supply is restored. The mechanisms of MIRI involve oxidative stress, calcium overload, energy metabolism disorder, apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, autophagy, pyroptosis, necroptosis, and ferroptosis. Apoptosis and autophagy have received more attention, but necroptosis and ferroptosis also play important roles. However, the exact mechanism of MIRI remains unclear.

Effects of pre-treatment with metoprolol and diltiazem on cerebral ischemia/reperfusion-induced injuries

Ghazaleh Sadrhaghighi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the calcium channel blocker diltiazem, and the beta-adrenoceptor antagonist metoprolol, on cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. The results showed that both diltiazem and metoprolol had significant neuroprotective effects, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and decreasing the size of the infarcted area.

Arthropod toxins inhibiting Ca2+and Na+channels prevent AC-1001 H3 peptide-induced apoptosis

Elena Iurova et al.

Summary: Peptide toxins from arthropods are potential sources of bioactive substances that can block apoptosis processes in cells. The study shows that these toxins dose-dependently inhibit apoptosis induction and reduce natural apoptotic levels in cells. Overall, the research reveals the anti-apoptotic effects of arthropod peptide toxins and their potential in treating pathologies associated with apoptotic mechanisms.

Summary: The study reveals distinct phenotypic transcriptomic signatures in human pulmonary endothelial and epithelial cells, with significant changes occurring after ischemia-reperfusion injury. Therapeutics that preserve these gene expression signatures may represent a new treatment approach to prevent acute lung injury during lung transplantation.

Hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury: effect of moderate intensity exercise and oxytocin compared to l-arginine in a rat model

Amr H. ELKady et al.

Summary: Hepatic ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury is a major cause of liver damage, and the l-arginine/nitric oxide pathway plays a role in this process. Moderate intensity exercise and oxytocin (Oxy) can protect the liver against IR-induced damage by improving antioxidant status and reducing inflammatory markers. The combination of moderate intensity exercise and Oxy shows more pronounced hepatoprotection compared to l-arginine, mainly due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
