Photodynamic therapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: narrative review focusing on photosensitizers

Summary: The effectiveness of photodynamic therapy in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck varies depending on the type of photosensitizer, tumor location, and stage. While promising for early-stage SCCHN, there is limited evidence supporting its efficacy in advanced tumors. Adverse effects were generally well tolerated by patients, suggesting potential for further clinical trials to determine its full effectiveness.

Summary: This study investigated the indications, efficacy, safety, and outcomes of potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser procedures for treatment of laryngeal disease. Results showed that KTP laser treatments have low complication rates and good vocal fold vibration recovery, but there is significant heterogeneity in the evaluation of treatment effectiveness. Further controlled studies comparing KTP laser with other techniques are needed to establish its safety and outcomes.

Summary: The office-based blue laser transnasal flexible laser surgery (TNFLS) is safe and effective in treating recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) and benign laryngeal lesions, with significant improvements in Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10) score. Comparison with other laser devices and further evaluation of cutting qualities of blue laser are needed for future applications in office-based treatment.
