Predictive Ability of First-Side Cochlear Implant Performance in Adult Sequential Bilateral Cochlear Implantation

Alexandra E. Quimby et al.

Summary: This study found that speech recognition scores from the first-side cochlear implant can predict the performance of the second-side cochlear implant in adults. This finding has important clinical implications for considering sequential bilateral implantation in adults.

Summary: The preoperative prediction of electrode position in cochlear implantation can be accurately done using otological planning software and different clinical imaging modalities. High-resolution imaging, such as fpVCT(SECO), is recommended for more accurate predictions.

The cost-effectiveness of unilateral cochlear implants in UK adults

Henry Cutler et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the cost-effectiveness of unilateral cochlear implants (UCIs) in UK adults with severe to profound hearing loss within the contemporary NHS environment. The results suggest that UCIs are more cost-effective compared to using hearing aids or not using hearing aids.

Effects of Sequential Bilateral Cochlear Implantation in Children: Evidence from Speech-Evoked Cortical Potentials and Tests of Speech Perception

Leticia Cristina Vicente et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of sequential bilateral cochlear implant use in children who received their first implant at a young age. The results showed positive changes in cortical auditory responses and speech perception with bilateral implantation, but asymmetric function between the ears was still present. The age at the first surgery and inter-implant delay predicted the differences between the two sides after one year of bilateral stimulation. Therefore, it is important to provide bilateral cochlear implants simultaneously or with minimal delay.

The smaller the frequency-to-place mismatch the better the hearing outcomes in cochlear implant recipients?

Griet Mertens et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that there is a significant linear correlation between frequency-to-place mismatch and speech perception in noise six months after cochlear implantation. Minimizing this mismatch can lead to better initial speech perception outcomes for cochlear implant recipients. However, the effect seems to disappear after twelve months of experience with the cochlear implant. Additional research is needed to explore tonotopic fitting strategies based on postoperative CT images of electrode contact locations.

One Click Is Not Enough: Anatomy-Based Fitting in Experienced Cochlear Implant Users

Anja Kurz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated a new methodological approach of applying anatomy-based fitting (ABF) in experienced cochlear implant (CI) users, which resulted in better speech perception in quiet and noise compared with the original clinical fitting mapping. The ABF mapping was accepted by users with longer electrode arrays and unsatisfied bilateral CI users, especially if the point of first electrode contact was less than 230 Hz.

In an era of bilateral funding and changing criteria, when is unilateral cochlear implantation a better option?

Olivia Ferguson et al.

Summary: This study examined the cohort of children who received a unilateral cochlear implant after funding for paediatric bilateral cochlear implantation became available. The results showed that unilateral cochlear implantation can be a good practice in certain circumstances, and careful monitoring and support for the first implant can lead to positive outcomes.

Evolving Criteria for Adult and Pediatric Cochlear Implantation

Varun V. Varadarajan et al.

Summary: Advancements in technology have expanded the indications for cochlear implantation, leading to improved audiologic outcomes for both adults and children. Despite significant underutilization in the United States, recognition of the potential benefits of cochlear implantation for non-traditional indications is crucial for evolving candidacy criteria. From patients with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss to those with residual hearing, single-sided deafness, and atypical etiologies, both adult and pediatric cochlear implantation have evolved to encompass a wider range of candidates.
