Psychosocial factors partially explain gender differences in health-related quality of life in heart failure patients

Javier Tapia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of gender on quality of life in heart failure. The findings showed that female patients had worse global, physical, and emotional quality of life compared to male patients, but better social quality of life. The differences in quality of life between genders can be partially explained by the interaction between biological and psychosocial factors.

The relationship between self-care, long-term mortality, and heart failure hospitalization: insights from a real-world cohort study

Esther Calero-Molina et al.

Summary: In patients with chronic heart failure, poor self-care is shown to be an independent predictor of long-term mortality (both all-cause and cardiovascular), heart failure hospitalization, and the combination of these endpoints. Crucial dimensions of self-care such as autonomy-based adherence and consulting behavior also determine the risk of these outcomes over time.

Iron Deficiency in Heart Failure: Mechanisms and Pathophysiology

Ridha I. S. Alnuwaysir et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency is a common comorbidity in heart failure patients and can have negative effects on exercise capacity, quality of life, hospitalization rates, and mortality risks. Intravenous iron correction has shown promising results in improving symptoms and reducing hospitalizations in heart failure patients. However, the underlying pathophysiology of iron deficiency in heart failure is still poorly understood.

Interplay between psychosocial and heart failure related factors partially explains limitations in self-care in patients with heart failure:insights from a real-world cohort of 1,123 patients

E. Calero-Molina et al.

Summary: The self-care behavior of patients with heart failure is influenced by clinical and psychosocial factors. Low social support, absence of caregiver support, and depressive symptoms are the main factors contributing to impaired self-care. It is important to assess and intervene in self-care in patients with heart failure by conducting comprehensive psychosocial assessments.

Do patient-reported outcome measures measure up? A qualitative study to examine perceptions and experiences with heart failure proms among diverse, low-income patients

Jonathan Davis et al.

Summary: In a study conducted in an urban safety-net setting, patients with heart failure generally accepted the KCCQ-12 but felt that it did not adequately measure key health components such as mental health and social relationships that impact their disease management. Further research on incorporating social determinants of health into Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) could improve their utility in diverse and underserved populations managing heart failure.

Improving exercise capacity and quality of life using non-invasive heart failure treatments: evidence from clinical trials

Stephan von Haehling et al.

Summary: The focus of large-scale trials in chronic heart failure has been on evaluating treatments in terms of hospitalizations and mortality, but improving exercise capacity and quality of life for patients with heart failure is also important. Current evidence shows limited effects of treatments on exercise capacity and quality of life, with further studies needed to better understand the effectiveness of these interventions.

Summary: In patients with heart failure, anemia is associated with poor prognosis. Patients with TSAT <20% have worse prognosis compared to those with TSAT >= 20%, and patients with ferritin between 100 and 300 ug/L and TSAT <20% likely have the poorest survival rate.

Summary: Intravenous iron therapy for heart failure patients can significantly reduce the risk of first heart failure hospitalization or cardiovascular mortality. The effect of intravenous iron on heart failure hospitalizations is significant, while the impact on cardiovascular mortality needs further investigation.

Summary: This study investigated the biological mechanisms between heart failure and iron deficiency and identified potential prognostic biomarkers through blood gene expression patterns. Patients with systemic iron deficiency in heart failure showed lower levels of key genes in blood, which correlated with adverse clinical outcomes.

Neurohormonal activation induces intracellular iron deficiency and mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiac cells

M. Tajes et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency is common in patients with heart failure and is associated with poor outcomes. Activation of neurohormones in heart failure leads to changes in iron homeostasis, reduced intracellular iron levels, and impaired mitochondrial function. This suggests that iron may play a role in the pathophysiology of heart failure.
