Selective Collection of Exhaled Breath Condensate for Noninvasive Screening of Breath Glucose

Aditya Desai et al.

Summary: A custom EBC collection device with a temperature-based algorithm was developed to selectively condense alveolar air for accurate EBC glucose detection. The device captured alveolar air more effectively, resulting in slightly higher and less variable glucose concentrations compared to the overall EBC. Patients with type 2 diabetes showed significantly higher blood plasma-EBC glucose ratios, indicating the potential of this method for distinguishing diabetes status.

Biosensor-Enabled Multiplexed On-Site Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Antibiotics

H. Ceren Ates et al.

Summary: Personalized antibiotherapy can maximize efficacy, minimize side effects, and prevent drug resistance. To better integrate therapeutic drug monitoring into clinical practice, a versatile biosensor with an antibody-free assay for on-site testing is introduced. This system offers rapid, low-cost, sample-independent, and multiplexed analysis, which can potentially shift the paradigm of one-size-fits-all strategy.

Inflammatory Biomarkers in Exhaled Breath Condensate: A Systematic Review

Federica Ghelli et al.

Summary: This systematic review compares baseline values of pro/anti-inflammatory biomarkers in Exhaled Breath Condensate (EBC) in healthy, non-smoking adults, aiming to summarize the concentrations reported in the literature. The adherence to guidelines is crucial due to differences in methodologies employed in the included articles concerning EBC sampling, storage, and analyses.

Michael Paal et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution of meropenem in various lung compartments compared to blood concentrations, revealing potential subtherapeutic dosing in high-risk patients receiving perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in lung transplantation. Individual variability was found to be significant, with successful application of target site measurement in a clinical setting.

Concentration profile of tobramycin in exhaled breath condensate after inhalation of a single dose: A pilot study

Maryam Khoubnasabjafari et al.

Summary: Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a noninvasive alternative for obtaining respiratory samples to study drug concentration in the airways, with this study exploring the feasibility of measuring tobramycin concentration using a synthesized nanoprobe. Tobramycin was detectable in EBC 4 hours post inhalation, with a limit of detection of 0.5 ng/mL, demonstrating the possibility of investigating the bioequivalency of inhaled formulations of tobramycin employing EBC samples. Mean C-max and AUC(last) values were 31.5 (6.8) ng/mL and 53.2 (25.5) ng.h/mL, respectively.

Pneumonia

Antoni Torres et al.

Summary: Pneumonia is a common acute respiratory infection that affects individuals of all ages globally, causing high morbidity and mortality. It can be caused by various microorganisms, and timely identification of causative pathogens is crucial for effective treatment. New therapies and diagnostic tests are being developed to improve the management of pneumonia.

Bronchoalveolar lavage-detected SARS-CoV-2 infection in presence of serial negative nasopharyngeal swabs: a case report

Grazia Caci et al.

Summary: A 54-year-old immunocompromised patient from Switzerland was infected with SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during a holiday trip to Texas, exhibiting atypical respiratory symptoms and radiological features of COVID-19. Despite multiple negative nasopharyngeal swabs, the infection was confirmed in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. The patient showed lymphocytosis with a decreased CD4/CD8 ratio in the BAL, a unique finding in SARS-CoV-2 infection.
