Bilateral simultaneous cochlear implantation is a safe method of hearing rehabilitation in adults

Maximilian Groeger et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 169 cases of bilateral cochlear implantation, comparing 34 simultaneous surgeries (group 1) with 135 sequential surgeries (group 2). The duration of surgery, incidence of complications, and duration of hospitalization were compared between the two groups. The results showed that simultaneous and sequential implantation in adults have similar safety profiles.

Cochlear Implantation in Pediatrics: The Effect of Cochlear Coverage

Noura Alothman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of insertion depth and position of cochlear implant (CI) electrode arrays on speech perception. The results showed that cochlear coverage was related to speech performance, with higher coverage associated with better speech discrimination score (SDS). The findings of this study are of significant importance for the outcomes of CI recipients.

Evaluation of the Listening Environment of Bilateral Cochlear Implant Users through Data Logging: A Comparison of Bilateral Simultaneous and Sequential Implantation

Tadao Yoshida et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the listening conditions of bilateral cochlear implant users in their daily living environment. The results showed that the second cochlear implant in sequential surgery had a lower speech discrimination score compared to other implants. Additionally, the longer the interval between surgeries, the more significant the difference in time on air between the first and second implants. Despite its lower speech discrimination performance, the second implant was more frequently used in noisy environments due to its binaural auditory effect. Therefore, the timing of sequential implantation and the potential impact of binaural hearing should be considered in rehabilitation strategies for individuals with bilateral cochlear implants.

Long-Term Follow-Up of Early Cochlear Implant Device Activation

Stefanie Bruschke et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate early CI device activation within 14 days of surgery, compare it to activation after 4-6 weeks, and assess the feasibility and safety of early fitting over a 12-month period. Early fitting was feasible in 97% of patients, with more minor medical complications observed in the early fitting group but no long-term wound healing problems. Regular magnet strength inspections are recommended for postoperative follow-up due to expected wound swelling.
