dPQL: a lossless distributed algorithm for generalized linear mixed model with application to privacy-preserving hospital profiling

Chongliang Luo et al.

Summary: This study develops a lossless distributed algorithm for the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM), which is used for privacy-preserving hospital profiling. The algorithm allows for sharing aggregated data across hospitals without revealing individual patient data, and achieves identical results as pooled data.

Sociotechnical safeguards for genomic data privacy

Zhiyu Wan et al.

Summary: Recent developments in various sectors, including healthcare, research, and the direct-to-consumer industry, have led to a significant increase in the collection, use, and sharing of genomic data. This poses new challenges for personal privacy, both legally and technically. This Review evaluates the existing and emerging threats to genomic data privacy and examines the effectiveness of current legal frameworks and technical safeguards in addressing these concerns. It concludes with a discussion of remaining and emerging challenges and proposes potential solutions to balance privacy protection with the benefits derived from the sharing of genetic information.

Privacy-aware estimation of relatedness in admixed populations

Su Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces a projection-based approach called SIGFRIED to simplify kinship estimation in admixed populations. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are demonstrated using simulated and real datasets. A secure federated kinship estimation framework is proposed, along with a secure kinship estimator using homomorphic encryption-based primitives.

Genotypes of informative loci from 1000 Genomes data allude evolution and mixing of human populations

Sridevi Padakanti et al.

Summary: This study proposes an algorithm to identify necessary informative loci by integrating principal component analysis and Ancestry Informative Markers, which can illuminate the evolution and mixing history of populations. The informative loci densely cover the genome and can approximate population identities based on weighted sums of minor or major alleles. The findings suggest that informative loci possess locational concentration in the genome and can predict population projections in independent genotype data.

Ultrafast homomorphic encryption models enable secure outsourcing of genotype imputation

Miran Kim et al.

Summary: Genotype imputation is a crucial step in genomic data analysis, and researchers have developed secure imputation using efficient homomorphic encryption techniques. The results show that HE-based methods offer genetic data security with comparable accuracy and resource requirements as non-secure methods.
