Drosophila postembryonic nervous system development: a model for the endocrine control of development

James W. Truman et al.

Summary: During postembryonic life, hormones play a crucial role in transforming the larval nervous system into an adult version. Among these hormones, ecdysteroids, particularly ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), are the key players in insect molting and metamorphosis as well as nervous system development. The effects of ecdysteroids are mediated through different isoforms of the ecdysone receptor, which allow neurons to respond to the changing levels of ecdysteroids and initiate specific developmental processes.

Noncanonical function of the Sexlethal gene controls the protogyny phenotype in Drosophila melanogaster

Ki-Hyeon Seong et al.

Summary: Drosophila melanogaster females eclose earlier than males due to sexual differences in the pupal period. The master sex switch gene Sxl was found to establish the protogyny phenotype through a noncanonical pathway in D. melanogaster.

Flexibility of neural circuits regulating mating behaviors in mice and flies

Tomomi Karigo et al.

Summary: Mating is crucial for animal reproduction, and animals need to make adaptive mating decisions based on internal needs and external conditions. Recent studies on flies and mice have provided insights into the neural basis of mating behaviors. However, the integration of internal and external factors in the nervous system for flexible mating decision-making remains poorly understood.

Frequency-specific modification of locomotor components by thewhitegene inDrosophila melanogasteradult flies

Chengfeng Xiao et al.

Summary: Mutation of the classic eye-color gene white (w) in fruit flies results in selectively increasing high-frequency locomotor components, leading to altered behavior patterns. This is associated with reduced transcripts of the w(+) gene in neurons, showing a link between genetic mutation and locomotion changes in adult fruit flies.

Mutants of the white ABCG Transporter in Drosophila melanogaster Have Deficient Olfactory Learning and Cholesterol Homeostasis

Jennifer L. Myers et al.

Summary: The study reveals a novel defect in olfactory memory acquisition in Drosophila white mutants, independent of visual defects. Mutants can reach wildtype performance levels with additional training. Dietary cholesterol intake and biogenic amine signaling may play a role in influencing the learning abilities of the mutants.

Why do males emerge before females? Sexual size dimorphism drives sexual bimaturism in insects

Tiit Teder et al.

Summary: In insects, the prevailing form of sexual bimaturism is protandry, with males typically emerging as adults before females, but protogyny also exists in about 36% of studied species. The evolutionary basis of sexual bimaturism in insects is more likely explained by indirect selection, with the direction and degree of bimaturism positively associated with sexual size dimorphism across species.
