Layer-structured Li1-xNaxNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2-δ oxide anode for enhancing ceria electrolyte based solid ceramic fuel cell operating at lower temperatures down to 370 °C

Liwen Huang et al.

Summary: A ceria electrolyte-based solid ceramic fuel cell (SCFC) with a layer-structured Li1-xNaxNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (LNNCA) anode was developed. The use of LNNCA anode significantly improved the power density of the fuel cell at high temperatures, while still maintaining operability at low temperatures. The anchoring effect of doped Na+ and the in-situ grown NaOH played crucial roles in enhancing the catalytic activity, electrical contact, and bonding between the anode and electrolyte, as well as providing transport channels for ions.

Cross-linked solid-liquid interfaces enable a fast proton transport in the aluminate heterostructure electrolyte

Liwen Huang et al.

Summary: Having a highly-conductive protonic electrolyte is crucial for developing solid ceramic fuel cells (SCFCs) operated at lower temperatures. A fast proton conducting NaAlO2/LiAlO2 (NAO-LAO) heterostructure electrolyte has been developed, achieving high ionic conductivity due to its cross-linked solid-liquid interfaces. The SCFC employing this electrolyte exhibited a maximum power density of 844 mW cm-2 at 550 degrees C and could still operate at even lower temperatures down to 370 degrees C, with reduced output.

Multifunctional layer-perovskite oxide La2-xCexCuO4 for solid oxide fuel cell applications

Qing Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the multifunctionality of layer-perovskite oxide La2-xCexCuO4 (LCCO) in low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Results show that LCCO is a good cathode material and delivers impressive anode performance. When mixed with an ionic conductor Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-delta (SDC), LCCO shows different power outputs and open circuit voltages in SOFCs.

Summary: This article uses first-principles simulations to study the atomic structure, thermodynamic, and electronic properties of undoped grain boundaries (GBs) and alkaline-earth metal (AEM) doped GBs in ceria. Doping with Ca, Sr, and Ba stabilizes the GBs, while Be and Mg render them energetically unstable. Electronic density of states reveal no defect states in AEM doped ceria.
