Electrochemical Performance and Mechanism of Surface-Fluorinated Fe3O4 as Stable Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yuyan Mo et al.

Summary: A surface fluorination strategy is developed to improve the electrochemical properties of iron oxides, enabling them to be used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. The fluorinated layer acts as a protective film, stabilizing the electrode/electrolyte interface, enhancing wettability, and providing more active centers for charge storage. As a result, the fluorinated Fe3O4 electrode exhibits high specific capacity and impressive high-rate performance, outperforming most Fe3O4-based electrodes reported previously.

Unusual Size Effect in Ion and Charge Transport in Micron-Sized Particulate Aluminum Anodes of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Chunlei Jiang et al.

Summary: Aluminum is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, excellent conductivity, and natural abundance. However, the insulating oxide surface layer and poor electrolyte wettability limit its capacity utilization and hinder reaction kinetics. Surface grafting of polar amino groups is an effective strategy to improve these issues. This study reveals the critical limitations and underlying mechanisms of the aluminum anode and provides insights for other metallic anodes with similar issues.

In situ observation of thermal-driven degradation and safety concerns of lithiated graphite anode

Xiang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the decomposition of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), lithium leaching, and gas release of lithiated graphite anode during heating were investigated using in situ synchrotron X-ray techniques and in situ mass spectroscopy. The source of flammable gas such as H-2 was identified, and the existence of highly reactive residual lithium on the graphite surface at high temperatures was confirmed. Our results highlight the crucial role of SEI in anode thermal stability and reveal the potential safety hazards of flammable gases and leached lithium.

Electrophoretically deposited bismuth iron oxide as dual role anode material for both lithium and sodium-ion batteries

Moumita Dewan et al.

Summary: The implementation of new energy storage technologies is crucial for addressing the ever-growing energy demand, and identifying suitable dual role anode materials while inspecting their reaction mechanism is significant for battery storage technology advancement. The EPD grown BFO anode shows impressive performance in both lithium and sodium storage, demonstrating the concept of dual role operation. The uniform BFO structure contributes to favorable Li and Na ion uptake by conversion reaction, offering potential for new dual role anode material development.
